Peace, the first, will be achieved. The fifth is the second. How does a monk mostly dwell and transform? Having crossed these five rivers, he will cross the sixth. How does a meditator who has not attained purity cross over great desire and craving? The aggregates are purified, and the mind is completely liberated. There is no fabrication, mindfulness is present, and there is no disturbance. Knowing all dharmas, the meditator without conceptualization is free from disturbance, attachment, and the faults of dullness. Thus, when a monk mostly dwells and transforms, having crossed these five rivers, he will cross the sixth. Thus, a meditator who has not attained purity will cross over great desire and craving. These are the verses asked by the young woman. The six rivers are these: the eye is a river because it sees forms, up to the mind being a river because it knows all dharmas. In this, the basis of the noble Hearer's training is seeing. With regard to forms that can be known by the eye, one dwells without attachment to pleasant objects, without anger towards unpleasant objects, and individually examines and dwells in equanimity towards neutral objects. It is like this: based on the aggregates of pleasantness, unpleasantness, and equanimity, one does not accept the arising of attachment, anger, or ignorance, and acts to eliminate them. Thus, he will become extremely purified by not engaging in the afflictions associated with these three aggregates. Such aggregates are extremely purified, but because the latent tendencies have not been abandoned, the mind is not completely liberated. At another time, if the associated latent tendencies are also abandoned, then one will be free from the afflictions associated with them. Thus, with regard to these three aggregates, the mind will be completely liberated from desire, anger, and ignorance. Just as with forms that can be known by the eye, it is the same up to tangible objects that can be known by the body. Thus, having abandoned the five lower fetters corresponding to the final part, he has crossed the five rivers. Looking at forms, etc.

From the point of crossing over the river of the eye, to touch the touchable, one crosses over the near shore of the river of the body. Having thus crossed over five rivers, in order to cross over the remaining sixth, the river of consciousness, one does not attend, is not distracted, and possesses mindfulness. How does one not attend? By placing faith in Nirvana, one does not generate the agitation of "I." One does not think, does not attend, from "This is my self" to "neither perception nor non-perception," one does not generate agitation. One does not think, does not attend. How is one not distracted? The afflictions corresponding to the higher division, one does not completely grasp in one's mind, does not cause it to be distracted, does not cause it to be completely transformed, does not cause the mind to turn elsewhere. One does not savor the taste of any samadhi of pacification. How is one not distracted? One does not practice, does not particularly cling, does not particularly cling and abide. How does one possess mindfulness? In order to abandon the afflictions corresponding to the higher division, one abides contemplating the body in the inner body, and is joined with the extensive mindfulness close establishments. Thus, by not attending, one abandons the craving for existence and becomes undistracted. By universal conduct, one abandons the craving for samadhi. Possessing mindfulness, and in order to completely abandon all the afflictions corresponding to the higher division, one cultivates the antidote. Thus, by not attending and possessing mindfulness, one is without distraction. Because of completely abandoning the afflictions corresponding to the higher division, one crosses over the sixth river, that is, in order to truly know the dharmas, one crosses over the river of consciousness. In another way, how is one not distracted? What is called non-distraction is loving-kindness, the root of virtue, because it is the nature of non-hatred. Therefore, in this way, the noble Shravaka abandons the wrong aspiration for the perishable aggregate view, and cultivates shamatha and vipassana. With loving-kindness, one cultivates shamatha. With the mindfulness close establishments, one cultivates vipassana. Thus,
