Having renounced, in order to completely abandon the desire for sensual pleasures, he dwells in monasteries, forests, and remote places. When he dwells in a monastery, dwelling far from home, in order to counteract those attachments to sensual objects that are universally conceived as belonging to the afflictive desire, he cultivates the four mindfulnesses. Even when he rises from that, when he relies on and dwells in whatever village or town, he enters that very village or town with his body well-guarded, his senses well-restrained, and abiding with mindfulness, and he walks and returns. He abides with awareness between going there, returning, and dispelling sleepiness and drowsiness. Relying on that abiding with mindfulness in those four mindfulnesses, he cultivates the antidote for the latent tendencies of desire for sensual pleasures. Relying on that very abiding with awareness, he will become free from obscurations, and for the sake of diligence, exertion, abandonment, and correct inner establishment, the body and mind become workable. Thus, relying on mindfulness and awareness, he directly abandons the afflictive sensual pleasures, and from being secluded from desires, he cultivates and abides up to the first dhyana. Thus, he has abandoned and completely understood that inferior, vulgar, separate-being's evil extreme of associating with sensual pleasures. What is suffering that is associated with harm? For example, here, some renunciates or Brahmins themselves perform intense asceticism, and by experiencing many forms of suffering in this life, they universally torment, greatly torment, and completely torment themselves, thinking that by experiencing suffering in this life, they will be completely liberated from suffering. However, they do not obtain the meaning for which they completely torment themselves, and they become those with a share of great poverty, this is called suffering associated with harm. Therefore, that noble hearer, having realized that extreme of making oneself weary, that painful, non-noble, harmful extreme, completely abandons it for a long time.
