That which is transformed is said to be the cause of those arising. What is the cause of cessation? It is all the paths that bring about the attainment of peace, which is the cessation of formations and the cessation of all defilements. It is what brings about the attainment of complete nirvana, what leads to perfect enlightenment, including the combination of the accumulations, including arising, including accomplishment, which is said to be the cause of cessation. These, in summary, are said to be the characteristics of cause. If they are extensively differentiated, they should be examined as they appear in the explanation of cause and effect. What are the characteristics of effect? Whatever arises, is obtained, is accomplished, is perfected, and is entered into from these five kinds of causes, that should be recognized as the characteristics of effect. What is the object that should not be examined? That should also be examined in terms of five characteristics: non-existence due to non-arising, non-existence due to cessation, one not existing in another, non-existence in ultimate truth, and absolute non-existence. What is non-existence due to non-arising? It is future formations. What is non-existence due to cessation? It is past formations. What is one not existing in another? It is when other dharmas are devoid of the characteristics of other dharmas and do not exist, or when other dharmas do not meet with other dharmas. What is non-existence in ultimate truth? It is whatever establishes the nature through speech that imputes self-nature by convention. What is absolute non-existence? It is the son of a barren woman and so forth, and whatever is similar to that. Furthermore, five kinds of dharmas are existence itself. Five kinds are non-existence itself. Among them, what are the five kinds of existence itself? The characteristic of the perfectly established is existence itself, the characteristic of dependence on others is existence itself, the characteristic of the completely imputed is existence itself, the characteristic of distinction is existence itself, and the characteristic of the inexpressible is existence itself. Among them, the first is the characteristic of ultimate truth. The second one after that is the characteristic of dependent arising. The third one after that is the characteristic of designation. The fourth one after that is the characteristic of time, the characteristic of birth, the characteristic of aging, the characteristic of abiding, the characteristic of impermanence, the characteristic of suffering, and the characteristic of emptiness.

The nature of self-nature, the nature of selflessness, the nature of things, the nature of what can be known, the nature of what is grasped, the nature of suffering and so on, the nature of benefit and so on, the nature of the sign of terms, the inverted nature of the sign of establishment and so on, and the nature similar to this, this is the nature of difference, it should be understood as such. The fifth below it is the nature of the unspeakable which is unspeakable in four ways, because of the absence, it is like this, that the person is different from the aggregates, or not different. Because of the profound, it is like this, that it cannot be said to be the nature of the Dharma, and the Dharmakaya of the Tathagatas is inconceivable, and the Buddha land is inconceivable, and so on, such as the Tathagata after death. Because it does not have meaning, it is like this, that whatever Dharma does not have Dharma and meaning, and pure conduct, although the Blessed One has realized it, he did not say it. Likewise, because of the nature of establishing the Dharma, it is like this, that it cannot be said that Suchness is different from the aggregates, or not different. What are the fivefold non-natures? That is, the non-nature of the ultimate nature, and the non-nature of the other-dependent nature, and the non-nature of self-nature in all things, and the non-nature of non-difference, and the non-nature of speakable nature. What is the Dharma's excellent distinction? It should be viewed as two types, namely the excellent distinction of the meaning of the Sutras, and the excellent distinction of the meaning of the verses. Among them, the excellent distinction of the meaning of the Sutras should be widely explained from the Samyutta, and from what is taught by the Bodhisattva Pitaka. The excellent distinction of the meaning of the verses should be viewed as three types, namely the establishment of the ultimate verses, and the establishment of the verses of the meaning of the intention, and the establishment of the verses of the meaning of the collection. Among them, the establishment of the ultimate verses is
