Now, what is the birth of this, that is, the expression that depends on the connection with the owner arises, such as the birth of form, feeling, perception, formations, and the birth of consciousness. If one says "form," and then asks "whose form is this?", there is no expression that depends on the connection with the owner. Just as with birth, aging, abiding, impermanence, and non-mental formations that are similar to it, one should understand them accordingly. This is called an expression that has a connection with the owner, and it should be understood as the characteristic of a name for whatever it exists in. What is the expression that distinguishes it from others? It is the expression that is definite, and that which is not shown by others. That is called distinguishing it from others. What is the expression that shows it by itself? It applies to both the characteristic of a thing and the characteristic of a name. What is the expression that shows others by others? It also applies to both the characteristic of a thing and the characteristic of a name. What is the expression that does not show it by itself and does not show others by others? It definitely applies only to the characteristic of a name. What is the expression that shows it by itself and applies to the characteristic of a thing? For example, the expression of the hardness of the earth. How does it apply to the characteristic of a name? For example, the expression of the roundness of a stone. Just as with the hardness of the earth and the roundness of a stone, the wetness of water, the drop of sesame oil, the heat of fire, the flame of fire, the lightness and movement of wind, and the force of wind are also similar. How does the expression that shows others by others apply to what exists as a thing? For example, the eye consciousness and the touch of the body, and so on. How does the imputed existence exist? For example, the food, drink, vehicle, clothing, and ornaments given by the Buddha or a virtuous friend. What is the expression that does not show it by itself and does not show others by others, and definitely applies only to the characteristic of a name? For example, like...

Such as the door of a house, the wall of a house, the mouth of a vase, the surface of a vase, the chariot of an army, the trees of a forest, ten of a hundred, three of ten, and so on. This is a statement of abandoning that by that, and abandoning other by other. What is the statement arising from signs? What is the statement that imposes self-nature arising from terms on the six aspects of signs? What are the six aspects of signs? The aspect of things, the aspect of being knowable, the aspect of unpleasantness and so on, the aspect of being beneficial and so on, the aspect of the sign of terms, and the aspect of reversed establishment and so on. What is the aspect of things? It is what is grasped by consciousness. What is the aspect of being knowable? It is what causes consciousness to arise through attention. What is the aspect of unpleasantness and so on? It is what is grasped by touch. What is the aspect of being beneficial and so on? It is what is grasped by feeling. What is the aspect of the sign of terms? It is what is grasped by conception. What is the aspect of reversed establishment and so on? It is what is grasped by mind. What is the statement arising from many? What is the statement that imposes self-nature on the assembled and gathered multitude of things? For example, for the internal form, feeling, conception, formation, and consciousness, stating self and so on, and for the external form, smell, taste, touch, existing in various ways, stating house, vase, army, forest, and so on. What is the statement that is not universally present? That is, some statements apply, and some do not. For example, calling a house a house is contrary to village, town, region, and so on. Calling a vase a vase is contrary to pottery, jar, bowl, and so on. Calling an army is contrary to each individual man, woman, boy, girl, and so on. Calling a forest is contrary to tree, root, trunk, leaf

, flowers, and fruits, etc., are each different. What is the expression of impermanence? This should be viewed from four aspects: difference, non-difference, manifestation, and complete transformation. What is difference? For example, when a pot breaks, what is called a pot ceases to exist, and what is called fragments appears. What is non-difference? For example, when various substances are mixed together to make flour or incense, what is called various substances ceases to exist, and what is called flour or incense appears. What is manifestation? For example, from a gold nugget that has not been finely processed, when it is finely processed and transformed into necklaces, bracelets, and armlets, etc., what is called a gold nugget ceases to exist, and what is called necklaces, bracelets, and armlets appears. What is complete transformation? For example, when food and drink are completely digested, what is called food and drink ceases to exist, and what is called feces and urine appears. Situations similar to this should be understood as not being expressions of impermanence. Therefore, whatever these six types of expressions involve should be understood as the characteristics of symbols, and this is called the characteristics of symbols. Chapter Nineteen. What is the characteristic of a cause? In short, this should be viewed from five aspects: the cause of the lovely, the cause of the unlovely, the cause of viewing, the cause of arising, and the cause of transformation. What is the cause of the lovely? It is virtuous dharmas with outflows. What is the cause of the unlovely? It is non-virtuous dharmas. What is the cause of viewing? The previously arisen virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified dharmas, through constant practice and meditation, repeated many times, cause the later arisen virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified dharmas to be viewed more and more intensely. This intense viewing is called the cause of viewing. What is the cause of arising? What kind of seed, habit, and companion will cause what kind of dharma to arise?
