The examination of qualities and faults, the examination of retinue, and the examination of wise and unwise. What is the examination of qualities and faults? For example, when a speaker begins to speak, he should think separately in this way: Will what I am about to say be harmful to myself, harmful to others, or harmful to both? Will it lead to suffering and displeasure in this life, the next life, or both this life and the next? Will it lead to the taking up of weapons, the taking up of sticks, fighting, exposing shortcomings, quarreling, debating, deceptive words, harm, lying, and the arising of various kinds of unwholesome and evil dharmas? Will it not be beneficial to myself, not beneficial to others, not beneficial to many people, not pleasant to many people, not loving to the world, and not be meaningful, beneficial, and pleasant to gods and humans? If he thinks separately in this way and realizes that what he is about to say will be harmful to himself, and so on, up to not being meaningful, beneficial, and pleasant to gods and humans, then the speaker should examine separately and should not speak. If he thinks separately in this way and realizes that what he is about to say will not be harmful to himself, and so on, up to being meaningful, beneficial, and pleasant to gods and humans, then the debater should examine separately and then debate. This is what should not be done and what should be done, this is the first aspect that arises from speaking. What is the examination of retinue? For example, the speaker should think separately in this way: Are these retinues attached? Are they not attached? Are they a good group? Are they a bad group? Are they wise? Are they unwise? If he thinks separately in this way and realizes that these retinues are attached, not unattached, not a good group, but a bad group, not wise, but unwise, then the speaker should examine separately and not speak to those retinues. If he thinks separately

If it is known that these retinues are without obvious attachment, are not obviously attached, are a good assembly, are not a bad assembly, are wise and not unwise, then the speaker should examine them separately and then speak to that retinue. This is like what should not be done and what should be done, the second arising from speech. What is the examination of the wise and the unwise? It is like this: the speaker himself should separately examine whether he is wise or unwise. Am I skilled in speaking, the promise of speaking, the basis of speaking, the adornment of speaking, and judging with punishment? Do I have the ability to establish my own principles of speaking, to be liberated from the state of punishment and judgment, and to cut off the debate of speaking? If one examines in this way, knowing that one is not wise but unwise, not capable but incapable, then the speaker should examine separately and not speak again. If one examines in this way, knowing that one is wise and not unwise, that one is capable and not incapable, then the speaker should examine separately and then speak about speaking. This is like what should not be done and what should be done, the third that necessarily arises from speaking, this is called arising from speaking. What are the dharmas that cherish speaking? It should be known that there are three dharmas that cherish speaking, namely, understanding one's own and others' tenets, fearlessness, and confidence. Why are these three dharmas called cherishing speaking? It is like this: if the speaker understands his own and others' tenets, he can speak about all things. Because of fearlessness, he can speak in all retinues. Because of confidence, he can answer all speech. Therefore, these three dharmas are called cherishing speaking, these are the dharmas that cherish speaking. Summary: Speaking and its promise, its basis and various adornments, and its punishment judgment, arising and cherishing. What is the science of sound? That should be viewed from six aspects, the various dharma designations
