, those who are proficient, and also do not like or rejoice in the Dharma and Vinaya, but proclaim, rejoice, listen to, contemplate, and fully mature in the treatises of other traditions, the customs of other traditions, and the tenets of other traditions, but do not practice them, but are proficient and familiar with words. Those who are proficient are called those who know their own and others' customs. What is a perfect combination of words? For example, here some people are speakers because of their skillful words, but not because of their unskillful words. So, what are words? It should be understood that they possess five qualities: they are not the language of villagers, they are fluent, they are dignified, they are related, and they are of good meaning. How is it that it is not the language of villagers? It is not the language of bad places, bad environments, or bad people. How is it fluent? It is a combination of words that is well-known in the world and very reasonable. How is it dignified? In order to accomplish the immediate meaning of what is being said, it is well-composed and powerful. How is it related? It is not that the Dharma and meaning are not related before and after. How is it of good meaning? It starts from eminence or definite goodness, and is not reversed. The combination of words of those speakers who are skilled in words should also be understood in this way as possessing nine perfections: it is not inappropriate, it is not a wrong creation, it is expressive, it is appropriate, it is meaningful, it is timely, it is combined, it is instructive, it is clear, and it is coherent. All of these together are a perfect combination of words, and this is called a perfect combination of words. What is fearlessness? For example, here some people, in the midst of many retinues of various kinds, or in crude retinues, or in attached retinues, or in assembled retinues, or in wise retinues, have no discouragement in their hearts, no humility in their hearts, no fear in their hearts, their bodies do not tremble, their faces do not change color, their voices do not tremble, and they speak without timidity.

This is called fearlessness. What is steadfastness? For example, some people here, when the time is right, speak slowly and deliberately, not rushing to speak. This is called steadfastness. What is not being contrary to others' feelings? For example, some people here have a nature that does not clash with other trees. Therefore, they do not go against the way those trees interact, protecting the minds of others and speaking words. Moreover, they do so when the time is right, truthfully, meaningfully, gently, and friendly. This is called not being contrary to others' feelings. Like these five ornaments of speech, know that there are also twenty-seven benefits. What are the twenty-seven benefits?
