And, from obtaining great rewards comes the pleasing of the king, from accomplishing good deeds comes the obtaining of wealth and abundant grain, from obtaining wealth and abundant grain comes the accomplishment of good deeds, from previous good deeds and misdeeds comes prosperity and decline, from prosperity and decline comes previous good deeds and misdeeds, from eating much food comes satisfaction, from satisfaction comes eating much food, from eating unsuitable food comes illness, from illness comes eating unsuitable food, from meditation comes freedom from desire, from freedom from desire comes meditation, from the path comes the fruit of the ascetic, from the fruit of the ascetic comes the path. In similar situations like these, it should be understood that inference arises from cause and effect. This is called inference. What is a reliable source of testimony? It is what is spoken by the all-knowing one, or heard from him, or any dharma that is in accordance with it. This should be examined in three ways: the collection of scriptures, the antidote to afflictions, and not contradicting the intrinsic nature. What is the collection of scriptures? Whether it is spoken by a Shravaka or spoken by the Buddha, the sutras that have been transmitted from one to another, that is what collects the Dharma and collects the meaning. What is the antidote to afflictions? Which Dharma, when practiced, will subdue desire, subdue hatred, subdue ignorance, and subdue all afflictions and near afflictions. What is not contradicting the intrinsic nature? The opposite of contradicting the intrinsic nature is not contradicting the intrinsic nature, and that is how it should be examined. What is contradicting the intrinsic nature? It is like this, to impute an intrinsic nature to something that has no intrinsic nature, for example, to examine "I" or "sentient being" or "life" or "living being," or annihilation, or having form, or not having form, and so on. From something that is definitely established as having one intrinsic nature, to establish it as uncertain, for example, to say, "All conditioned phenomena are impermanent," "All contaminated phenomena are suffering," "All dharmas are without self," if it is said like that, then some establish it as permanent, and some establish it as impermanent.
