From the presence of nests, one can infer the existence of tree trunks. From movement and limb activity, one can infer the presence of people. From the traces of canals, one can infer the presence of elephants. From the traces of bodily movement, one can infer the presence of snakes. From the sound of "tse-re tse-re," one can infer the presence of horses. From the sound of roaring, one can infer the presence of lions. From saying "bug," one can infer the presence of ants. From seeing, one can infer the presence of eyes. From hearing, one can infer the presence of ears. From smelling, one can infer the presence of a nose. From tasting, one can infer the presence of a tongue. From touching, one can infer the presence of a body. From distinguishing, one can infer the presence of mind. From obstructing the appearance in water, one can infer the presence of earth. From seeing the direction of oiliness and blueness, one can infer the presence of water. From seeing ashes and heat, one can infer the presence of fire. From the swaying of trees, one can infer the presence of wind. From always closing the eyes, holding a cane, being led by others, walking unsteadily, and not following the usual path, one can infer the presence of a blind person. For those who have faith, are learned, have desire, are not free from desire, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas, one should observe and infer from their actions as before. What is inference from Dharma? It is the examination of the nature of things related to inseparable Dharmas and connections. For example, from being connected with impermanence, one can infer suffering. From being connected with suffering, one can infer emptiness and selflessness. From being connected with birth, one can infer the nature of aging. From being connected with aging, one can infer the nature of death. From being connected with form, visibility, and obstruction, one can infer direction and the existence of a body. From being connected with defilements, one can infer suffering. From being connected with non-defilements, one can infer the absence of suffering. From being connected with conditioned things, one can infer the nature of arising, ceasing, and changing. From being connected with unconditioned things, one can infer the nature of no arising, no ceasing, and no changing. It should be understood that what is similar to this is inference from Dharma. What is inference from cause and effect? It is the examination of the effect from the cause, or the cause from the effect. For example, from walking, one can infer having gone to another place. From having gone to another place, one can infer walking. From pleasing the king, one can infer obtaining a great reward.
