Completely questioning. Establishing from improper conduct. Regarding this, what is meant by "prophecy"? If it is said that "the Blessed One has not prophesied," then this can also be referred to as "prophecy" in this inquiry. Giving that is pure and impure should be understood as fourfold. Among them, purity is threefold: one's own discipline and view are complete, others' discipline and view are complete, and both's discipline and view are complete. Impurity is onefold: one's own and others' discipline and view are deteriorated. Among them, purity is this: the resources of being born in a good realm are complete. Impurity is this: there is no lack of resources for being born in a bad realm. These four methods, when gathering a retinue, will correctly gather the retinue, namely: benefiting, gathering, causing to enter, and causing to be completely pure. These four are the places of birth of sentient beings' karma, the doors of reliance for being born in those various realms, namely: the egg of karma, the womb of karma, the warmth and moisture of karma, and karma itself. For sentient beings born in those various places, there are four times of death: caused by one's own karma, such as being born among the gods who are intoxicated by play and cause the mind to be confused. Caused by others' karma, such as the Marmelpo, Narnarpo, and Gorgorpo in the mother's womb. Caused by the karma of both: that is, other sentient beings who engage in desire. Not caused by one's own karma, nor caused by others' karma, such as sentient beings who engage in form and formlessness, down to the peak of existence. These four are the paths of purity: the power of effort is not complete, and joy is not complete; the power of effort is complete, but joy is not complete; joy is complete, but the power of effort is not complete; joy is complete, and the power of effort is also complete. Furthermore, there are four paths of purity: the Dharma of wrong speech

Not leaning towards inferiority, and clearly leaning towards the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, are the path of the Sangha and the path of complete purification. The first case is that some here have become adherents of externalist views, not desiring and not being able to endure harmful and intense asceticism. The second case is that some here are skilled in and desire and endure the aggregates, elements, sense bases, dependent origination, and what is and is not the proper place; they are of a nature to endure cold and so forth and to willingly accept it. The third is the laws belonging to the collection of virtues, such as guarding morality and the doors of the senses. The fourth is calm abiding and insight for the sake of abandoning afflictions and abiding happily in this life. These four are the training in higher mind of a learner, because without separation from desire from all desires, for the sake of attaining the fruit of non-return, and relying on the unimpeded non-return, for the sake of abiding happily in this life, and for the sake of abandoning the sins of others and going to a good rebirth, and for the sake of abandoning all of one's own afflictions. Actions are of two kinds, to be understood as four types: three types of actions that belong to entering, and actions that belong to reversing. Among them, the definitely unpleasant result matures in the lower realms. The definitely pleasant result matures in the form and formless realms. The pleasant and unpleasant result matures in the gods and humans who enjoy in the desire realm. The fourth is that all three types of actions will be abandoned. These four are the particular attachments of sentient beings, namely, not beneficial to happiness, and not bringing happiness to benefit, and both bringing benefit and bringing happiness, and neither bringing benefit nor bringing happiness. The afflictions of sentient beings enter from four doors and will encounter suffering such as birth: the door of particular attachment to desire, the door of particular attachment to the samadhi of the form and formless realms, the door of the views of externalists other than this, and the door of ignorance of those who have not obtained the eye of the Dharma.
