Bound by... (Afflictions) Bound by the bonds of discrimination, they bind the characteristics of objects such as form. With afflictions such as desire and near afflictions, with the bonds of manifest attachment, they bind the very bodies and so forth as previously stated. It should be known that the antidotes to these four bonds are the four mindfulnesses. These four are the consideration of faults, the basis for becoming an antidote, and the preceding desire and effort, in order to abandon the pervasively acting non-virtuous dharmas, and in order to abandon those associated with them, and in order to attain virtuous dharmas, and in order to increase them. These four are the doors of birth that become the abiding of the mind and the mind striving to attain samadhi, that is, desiring to manifest, hearing the Dharma, reciting, diligently studying, the mind holding the characteristics of excellent samadhi, dwelling in solitude and contemplating the meaning of the Dharma. These four are the mind abiding in equanimity, the mind becoming abiding, that is, the mind abiding with investigation and analysis, with joy, and without investigation and analysis but with joy, and without joy, and with equanimity, and with pure mindfulness, and completely transcending pleasure and pain. These four are to be known as the suchness of the completely defiled and the pure aspects. If these are known, then the afflictions to be abandoned by the path of seeing and the path of meditation will be abandoned. The aspect of affliction is also the suchness of the result and the suchness of the cause. The aspect of purification is also the suchness of the result and the suchness of the cause. These four are the bonds of elaboration preceded by consciousness, that is, for those with little desire there are the bonds of elaboration preceded by consciousness, and for those who have become great form there are the bonds of elaboration preceded by consciousness, and for the infinite realms of space and consciousness there are the bonds of elaboration preceded by consciousness, and for the realm of nothingness, there are the bonds of elaboration preceded by consciousness. Four dharmas.

These four are: cultivating the antidotes to malice, various forms of harm, displeasure, and craving for desires towards sentient beings will increase great merit and lead to detachment from craving for desires. Namely, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. These four dharmas transcend the realm of form and lead far away: space, consciousness, nothingness, and the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. These four are the dharmas that serve as the basis for the cause of the noble liberation, where yogis strive to perfect liberation, namely, abandoning the four cravings, not striving or being distracted for the sake of meager clothing, food, bedding, and cushions, applying oneself in due time to produce fruit, and delighting in cultivating the path that eliminates afflictions without mental distraction. These four are the fruits of cultivating the path, which is the elimination of afflictions: eliminating the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, eliminating those to be abandoned by cultivation, eliminating the great and intermediate portions of the lower fetters, and completely eliminating them, and completely eliminating all the higher fetters. These four are the limbs of entering the stream: one will not waver or regress from this teaching and the good realms, namely, unwavering joy arising from the realization of the teacher himself, and the Dharma as realized by the teacher, and those who realize this Dharma, and those who have entered in order to realize it are also the same, these three are the initial mind. The fourth is pure form, belonging to the precepts pleasing to the noble ones. Among them, three will not regress from this teaching, and the last one will not regress from the good realms. These four are the limbs for attaining the fruit of entering the stream: the teacher and the teachings are pleasing, the Dharma is taught without perversion, listening to the teachings, and realizing it with correct thought, and accomplishing it through cultivation.
