The method of exhausting defilements by relying on meditation is, in brief, to always keep everything in mind. There are four factors that cause the doctrine to be perpetuated: complete solitude, meditation, the fruit of meditation, and the harmony of the doctrine. Among these, complete solitude refers to monasteries, the foot of trees, and empty houses. Meditation refers to going to these places and practicing two dharmas, namely tranquility and insight. It is said, "One should universally cultivate tranquility, and by relying on insight, one will be liberated." For example, if one has attained from the first dhyana to the fourth dhyana, then by relying on that samadhi, one will truly know from suffering to the path as it is, and by seeing with that insight, the mind will be liberated from all the afflictions that are to be abandoned. How can one be liberated by universally cultivating insight and relying on tranquility? Here, some people truly know from suffering to the path as it is, and abiding in that superior wisdom, they generate meditation. By relying on that tranquility, through meditation, the mind will be liberated from the afflictions that are to be abandoned. Thus, if one fully cultivates tranquility and insight, one will be liberated in the realms. Among these, the realm of abandonment is the abandonment of all formations to be abandoned by seeing. The realm of detachment is the abandonment of those to be abandoned by cultivation. The realm of cessation is the cessation of all aggregates, which is the fruit of meditation. The harmony of the doctrine means that the teacher and the hearers are consistent and identical in meaning, word, and letter, and not like the minds of other heretics, which are confused and different. For example, "consistent with the first words" means consistent with the previous words. If someone asks one person a question, and then asks the same question to another person, the answer should be consistent. However, if one starts asking about the aggregates from one, and then asks another from another, then it is not consistent with the first words.

From the "Stages of Yoga Practice": The section on meditative stabilization is complete. Volume Fifteen. What is the ground of non-stabilization? It should be understood that if the essence of this ground is summarized, there are twelve aspects. Among the grounds of non-stabilization, there are also those that are inherently non-stabilized, such as the aggregates of the five consciousnesses. There are also grounds of non-stabilization because of the lack of thorough training, such as the mind and mental factors that operate in the desire realm. Even if there is one-pointedness of mind, because the mind and mental factors are not fully controlled by thorough training, it is called non-stabilization. There are also grounds of non-stabilization because of not having started, such as those who act in the desire realm. Those who are particularly attached to desires, and those who indulge in desires. There are also grounds of non-stabilization because of distraction, such as when beginners strive in meditation, their minds are distracted by the five desirable qualities and follow them. There are also grounds of non-stabilization because of being withdrawn, such as when beginners strive in meditation, their minds are withdrawn inward and are overcome by dullness and sleep. There are also grounds of non-stabilization because of not having attained, such as when those beginners strive in meditation, even if their minds are not distracted or afflicted by withdrawal, they have not attained the mind and mental factors of attention. There are also grounds of non-stabilization because of not being fully accomplished, such as when attention has been attained, but the ultimate attention of practice has not been attained, nor have its results. There are also grounds of non-stabilization because of being completely afflicted, such as when the ultimate practice and the attention of the result have been attained, but the mind is afflicted by any of the near afflictions such as savoring. There are also grounds of non-stabilization because of lacking control, such as when the ultimate practice and the attention of the result have been attained, but on one's own mind
