Some have attained (meditative stabilization) but have not seen the truth. They are purified by listening to the true Dharma and by much learning. As soon as they are settled, they rely on that samadhi and realize the truths such as suffering. They rely on higher mind and connect with higher wisdom. Furthermore, from suffering to the path, they truly understand as it is, but they have not attained the first dhyana and so on. As soon as they are settled, they settle their mind, but they do not discriminate the dharmas. They rely on that higher wisdom itself and connect with higher mind. The third is that both are attained. Their shamatha and vipashyana are mixed together, and they make them equally united. The fourth is that the first dhyana and so on have been attained before. However, they have not been purified by listening to the true Dharma and by much learning. They listen to the Dharma from a teacher or any guru, in a way that abandons the remaining attachments, or they will realize the truths. Or they will attain the state of Arhat. They will also understand the great joy, the vast merit, and the Dharma that is sure to arise. They enter with that mind protected by the Dharma. Having settled in this way, they also settle that mind by settling in the samadhi of dhyana. Among them, the first teaching of the path is taught starting from the practice of the path of seeing. The second and third are taught starting from the practice of the path of meditation. The fourth is taught starting from the practice of both. There are four main types of purification, because they are the main factors for becoming pure. What is purification? What is the main thing? Whatever precepts etc. are obtained, acquired, and realized are all complete, and whatever is beneficial is purification. That which is done with diligence, whatever is incomplete is made complete, that is the main thing. What is the completion of precepts? What is beneficial? Here, some people abide in possessing precepts, being restrained by the Pratimoksha vows, and the rituals and conduct are all complete.

It is not a place either. Nor is it to regard even the slightest faults as fearful. Because that discipline is not complete. When all those exist, then it is complete. This is the complete discipline. Starting from guarding the doors of the senses through long habituation, up to what is called abiding, it should be expanded to the state where the discipline has that state and that nature. That is benefit. What is complete samadhi? If one obtains the ultimate fruit of union, or becomes the fourth dhyana, that is complete. Below that is not complete. What is benefit? Obtaining samadhi, becoming more and more purified, and that samadhi not being completely grasped by fabrication, should be expanded in this way. What is complete view? What is benefit? Arising from the cause of others' words, and generating correct view from proper attention, thereby fully understanding from suffering to the path. If one does not know the truth as it is, then it is not complete. When one fully understands the correct view as it is, then it is complete. Benefit is, at that time, other defilements are exhausted, should be expanded in this way. What is complete liberation? What is benefit? Through the wisdom of the learner, liberation from desire and so on, that is not complete. What is not a learner is complete. Benefit is, no matter how one acts, no matter how one abides, one will not completely fall away from the happiness of this life. Bhikshus, having entered a state of completely purified mind, should constantly remember the five characteristics, as it is said in the sutra. The effort of higher mind is, entering a state of completely purified mind. For that state, unwholesome thoughts such as desire, and thoughts about relatives and so on, will cause obstacles. Moreover, according to the difference of small, medium, and large actions of thoughts, there are three kinds of people.
