The first is that, because one keeps other characteristics in mind, those thoughts do not arise at all. The second is that, because one sees the faults of thoughts, one does not remember them, or one does not pay attention to them. If asked: How does one not remember and not pay attention? Answer: Through methods such as settling the mind within. The third person, even through those methods, at first, it is not the case that all thoughts do not arise at all. Therefore, in order to pacify the gross thoughts, one should gradually suppress them, and ultimately eliminate the fabrication of thoughts. If that is also not possible, one should generate aversion and fear towards the paths of thoughts and the objects of thoughts. Having generated aversion, one torments the mind that has thoughts by paying more attention to it with a mind that has aversion, that is, one subdues it. Those are the five ways of the three types of people. The Blessed One said in the Sutra of Refining Gold: 'Refine the mind like refining gold.' So, how should that be understood? There are three types of complete purity of gold: complete purity of faults, complete purity of bullion, and complete purity of usability. Among them, complete purity of faults means that, from the gold taken from the mine, after removing the coarse, medium, and fine impurities, only the part where the gold's exterior becomes clean remains. Complete purity of bullion means that it is the pure gold bullion formed after melting those golds. Complete purity of usability means that it is because the faults such as impurities in the gold bullion have been completely cleared away. Just as gold exists in the mine, one should regard the mind abiding in the lineage as entering complete purity and having the potential to completely liberate from suffering and become disgusted. So, from what point is it called entering the complete purity of the mind? From the point of obtaining the faith that can manifest faith. The state of being at home and the state of manifestation have three afflictions close to them, namely grossness, etc. Among them, there are two things that hinder the transformation from being at home to manifestation: the limit of unwholesome actions, and the delight in the misdeeds of body and speech and

Whatever it may be, the sinful view that there are no Arhats who have truly passed away in the world is an obstacle to gaining faith before faith is attained. Thoughts of desire and the like hinder the joy that has manifested. Thoughts of relatives and the like hinder the continuous practice of virtuous Dharma that has manifested joy. If these are cut off, the mind will become pure in order to make the practice of virtuous Dharma continuous, and that is with investigation and analysis. Just as gold powder that has been refined but not yet made into ingots, this is the purification of the mind's near afflictions, because it is like gold. From the pacification of investigation and analysis to the attainment of the four dhyanas, this is called the purification of the mind's collection, because it is collected by samadhi without investigation and analysis, and it is like melting gold and making it into ingots. If samadhi is not attained by fabrication, then what is explained in detail next is that by practicing the workability of the mind, one can transform at will the dharmas to be known, and it is like removing impurities from gold. Furthermore, the saying "one should remember the three characteristics" is to counteract sinking and the like, and to remember calm abiding and the like from time to time. If one has not completely purified calm abiding and insight, and only meditates on one part of them, this is the characteristic of sinking and excitement, which is the path of application. The saying "remember the characteristic of equanimity from time to time" is the time of the path of accomplishment. If one only meditates on one part, one will not thoroughly analyze dependent origination and truth, and therefore one cannot settle the mind in the correct mindfulness to exhaust defilements. In this way, truths that have not been realized will not be realized. Or even if one realizes them, one will not attain the exhaustion of defilements, these two are the path of perfect accomplishment of samadhi. The third is the samadhi of
