One should make the excellent complete. What are the benefits of samadhi? For example, knowing shame, being conscientious, joy, reverence, faith, proper attention, mindfulness, awareness, sense restraint, moral discipline, absence of distraction, and so on, up to and including bliss. As it is said in the scriptures, if one attains bliss, the mind will become equally abiding. The opposite of this should be understood as not beneficial. What are benefits and non-benefits? For example, knowing shame, being conscientious, and so on, some of which are possessed and some of which are not. For example, possessing shame and being conscientious, but not possessing joy and reverence, should be widely combined. What is growth? It is the increase of samadhi that has already been attained. What is decline? It is whatever causes the loss of samadhi. What is the means? It is the path that leads to either growth or decline. Śamatha (calm abiding), vipaśyanā (insight), and upekṣā (equanimity) should be understood exactly as the characteristics of śamatha and so on have been explained. Even though a meditator has attainments, there are also instances of decline. This is explained in detail in the fourth chapter of the Sutra on the Differentiation of Meditators. Therefore, one should fully understand the perversions in the two situations of falling away from samadhi and going into excellence. The path of falling away and falling away is decline. The path of going into excellence and going into excellence is attainment. How does he perceive that the joy and bliss born of his own solitude are a loss, and that his own samadhi is completely lost? In this regard, the meditator, through the cause of meditation, makes the mind peaceful and focused, which is because it is related to equanimity. He enters the preparatory stage of the second dhyana from the first dhyana, but he is not skilled in this. Because at that time, he has passed beyond the joy and bliss of the first dhyana, but has not yet attained the joy and bliss of the second dhyana. He thinks to himself: The joy and bliss born of my solitude have been lost. Then he abandons that mind. The meditator should fully understand the perversion there. In samadhi

When one declines from meditative absorption, how does one fully understand the perverted aspects? Here, if someone has attained the samāpatti of the first dhyāna, they see from viewing nirvāṇa as without illness to the vast non-self. Starting from that attention, they accumulate merit. Relying on that complete accumulation of nirvāṇa, due to that cause and that condition throwing it, naturally, such attentions arise. Whatever attentions belong to the form aggregate, up to the consciousness aggregate, whatever exists therein, appears to them from within, up to the vast non-self. Relying on that attention, the joy and pleasure born from worldly samāpatti do not arise in them. Therefore, they think, "The benefit born from my samādhi is declining with dependence." Then they turn their mind away from it. Thus, when a meditator declines from samādhi, they should abandon the perverted aspects. When declining from samādhi, how does one fully understand the non-perverted aspects? Here, if someone is content with the samāpatti of the first dhyāna and does not strive further, and also tastes its flavor, that is their attention associated with desire. Because that is a samāpatti close to the desire realm, they will completely decline. That is their decline, and they also consider it to be a decline. Therefore, they should fully understand the non-perverted aspects from it. Furthermore, if someone attains samāpatti through the samāpatti of dhyāna, but says that others have not attained it now, thereby praising themselves and disparaging others, that is their attention associated with desire. Because that attention that completely entangles them increases and becomes stronger, they will completely decline from that samādhi. That is their decline, and they also consider it to be a decline. Furthermore, if someone attains the samāpatti of dhyāna, and thereby makes the opposing king or ministers believe in them. Those people also to them
