between. I think to myself, I have entered into this samadhi. However, I may not fully understand the names, words, and combinations of letters of those samadhis. What is abiding? It is to well-hold the aspects, signs, and characteristics by which one enters into samadhi. By well-holding them, one abides in samadhi as long as one desires, and does not fall away from that samadhi. Abiding in samadhi and not falling away, these two are called abiding. What is rising? For example, not remembering the aspects, signs, and characteristics by which one enters into samadhi, but remembering a dharma that is not in accordance with the state of samadhi, which does not belong to the manifestation of the body of samadhi, or for the sake of doing something, or for the sake of determining something, or because of having promised something, it is like rising from samadhi. Among these, lawful actions are as follows: the affairs of robes, bowls, and utensils. Among these, the things that need to be determined are: teaching the Dharma, urinating, begging for alms, and serving the guru. Among these, the things that are promised are: for example, vowing for certain things, because he has promised others, he will practice on certain things. Or, in order to enter into another samadhi, one will also rise from that samadhi. Among these, what are the aspects? Thinking about the object as it is and entering into samadhi, that is, the aspects of grossness, peace, disease, result, suffering, impermanence, and so on, that is, the various aspects that arise from that samadhi. What are the signs? When one is close to entering samadhi, and is truly close to entering samadhi, by what signs does he know: I will not be long before entering into such and such a samadhi, or I will enter samadhi, or I am entering samadhi. These signs of entering samadhi will appear in him, or his teacher will also say: This person will not be long before entering into such and such a samadhi.

It will be known from those that one will enter into samadhi. What are the signs? There are two signs: the sign of the object and the sign of the basis. Among these, the sign of the object is the body of discrimination, by what object does one enter into samadhi? The sign of the basis is by what collection of samadhis does one enter into samadhi? For example, conducive instructions and the collection of samadhis, etc., having the intention of meditation and the mind of renunciation, and completely understanding distraction and non-distraction and focusing the mind, or not being aroused by the sound or action of others. What is the experience of ease? If his samadhi is encompassed by effort, blocked like water, not encompassed by nature, not peaceful, not abundant, not having attained the path of extreme pliancy, and the continuum of mind becomes one, not realization, then his samadhi is not an experience of ease for abiding in whatever is comfortable. The opposite of that is an experience of ease. How is it encompassed by effort? With a mind possessing aspiration, gathering the external mind, and truly abiding in that samadhi, such an attention is entering with effort. Like that, not allowing it to scatter outward, it is blocked like water. How is it encompassed by nature? The lower is seen as the nature of coarseness, and the higher is seen as the nature of peace. Peace, abundance, attaining the path of extreme pliancy, and the realization of the continuum of mind becoming one, are just like the samadhi possessing the five noble wisdoms. What is the field of activity? Because one does not understand what the object of samadhi is, and even does not understand entering into samadhi, for example, entering into the first dhyana, not seeing the second dhyana, similarly, one does not understand the excellence of the faculties and the person. What is actualization? The extensive meaning of words and letters is briefly summarized, and qualities
