The so-called "entering into samadhi" is for the sake of well grasping the characteristics of samadhi and not forgetting them. The so-called "rising with mindfulness" is for the sake of well grasping the characteristics of rising from samadhi and not forgetting them. What is the samadhi with five branches? Here, the joy and happiness that arise from the monk's own body being secluded are the grounds for the first dhyana. Among them, joy makes one rejoice, and happiness makes one completely rejoice. At the time of the ultimate application of attention, it pervades everywhere. At the time of the previous attentions, it is completely satisfied. At those times, joy and happiness only occur occasionally. It is neither a complete teaching nor a complete fulfillment. At the time of the ultimate application of attention to the fruit of union, there is nothing that it has not pervaded, or nothing that needs to be pervaded. In this regard, the practice of yoga should be observed like a bathing person or a wise disciple of a bathing person. The bathing vessel, or basin, or bathing cloth, should be regarded as the subsequent instruction of the teachings based on the joy and happiness arising from detachment from desires. The fine bathing powder should be regarded as the discriminations and so on that necessarily arise in accordance with it. Sprinkling water to moisten it should be regarded as the path of complete purification of discriminations. A lump of bathing powder should be regarded as the body. It is soft because it has joy. Having softness is because it has happiness. Pervading inside and out means showing that one constantly has joy and happiness. Not scattering means not being distracted. Not dripping means not tasting flavors because there is no affliction at all. In the second case, one should also observe the difference in examples, where, like a mountain, it is samadhi with discriminations. Its flat top is the second dhyana without discriminations, because it has a single liking for the object of focus. A dried-up lake is because the inside is completely clear. A spring is where water comes out from. A canal is where water flows upwards, these two

Thus, it sequentially demonstrates joy and happiness. The aspects of softening, etc., are as before. The term "without non-pervasion" means that it is due to continuous connection. There is also a distinction in the third example. Among them, happiness without joy is like the lotus and so on. The dharmas that possess the same qualities, and the body, are also without joy. Samadhi without conceptuality and without analysis is like water. Joy is extreme joy; because of its absence, it is said to be submerged. There is also a distinction in the fourth example. Among them, the so-called completely pure mind is endowed with equanimity and completely pure mindfulness, because it has completely transcended the faults of the lower realms. The term "completely purified" means that virtue does not taste the all-pervasive afflictions of its own ground. Why is the example taken from a householder? Because it is the nature of examining and being cautious, thinking, measuring, and discriminating; that is, regarding gathering and arranging, there is nothing that is not known. Similarly, obtaining the completely pure fourth dhyana is entering into examining and being cautious, and knowing all meanings is clear. The term "woven by eight people or woven by nine people" means that it is strong, showing that flies and mosquitoes cannot enter. The term "with head and feet" means that thin clothes or the fault of being naked will intrude, so it shows that there are neither of these two faults. Similarly, because the completely pure mind pervades it, all disturbances cannot intrude, that is, enduring cold and heat, as well as calling and scolding, and others speaking badly, and the feelings of body and mind. There is also a distinction in the fifth example. The characteristic of individual discrimination is excellent, and the so-called "extremely excellent" should be understood as having been exhausted in the previous explanation. That is, one individually examines the conditioned phenomena of the three times. With what does one individually examine, and one also individually examines that; this is its condensed meaning. What is the samadhi of the noble ones? How are the five limbs established? That is, the one-pointedness of mind of the noble ones in the four dhyanas.
