If. The term "immeasurable" is used because the result is immeasurable, like the confluence of the four great rivers. The term "extremely cultivated" is used because it is extremely and completely purified. How does the mind endowed with love and so forth abide? It is said: The term "believing and pervading, cultivating and" is synonymous with believing with superior intention and pervading. The term "cultivating and" means completely purified, completely subdued. The term "abiding" is because it causes time to pass in the manner of causing day and night to pass. The cultivation of love is the best of virtues, so it is said extensively. From what intention is it said? For example, the third dhyana is the best of pleasures, therefore, the love that is closely cultivated and completely cultivated is also the best, therefore it is called the best of virtues. Compassion is also the best because it is closely cultivated and completely cultivated in the sphere of infinite space, and it is also because it has the intention of giving suffering and closely cultivating. Therefore, in the formless realm, it is completely non-existent, because there is no suffering of cutting and piercing and so on. Entering into the samadhi of compassion, thinking of those sentient beings who have suffering, where there is no suffering and the basis of suffering, may they be born in that sphere of infinite space, thereby engaging in close cultivation. Entering into the samadhi of joy, one closely cultivates sentient beings who have happiness and have attained joy in the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking that the happiness of these sentient beings is as uninterrupted in the sphere of infinite consciousness, may they become as immeasurable. In this way, closely cultivating the sphere of infinite consciousness, the joy that is completely cultivated is the best. For example, this sphere of nothingness is the limit of the uncontaminated mind, which is the best of equanimity. Therefore, just as a bhikshu arhat is not defiled by afflictions in all practices of pleasure, pain, and neither pain nor pleasure, thinking that these sentient beings may also be like that. Entering into the samadhi of equanimity, what

Moreover, it is accomplished by taking the realm of nothingness as the proximate cause. Therefore, the equanimity that is fully cultivated by accomplishing the realm of nothingness as the proximate cause is supreme. All of these aspects of the noble ones, which possess the limbs of enlightenment, can only be cultivated by the noble ones themselves. What is the samadhi cultivated in one part? It is entering into samadhi by focusing on the sign of appearance or the sign of form. Through these two, one truly knows the appearance in order, or one becomes able to see forms. What is the samadhi cultivated in two parts? It is entering into samadhi by focusing on both. By this, one truly knows the appearance and also sees the forms. Thus, for the samadhi that fully cultivates appearance, it should be understood that it is interrupted by eleven kinds of obstacles, such as doubt, as extensively described in the sutras. What do these characteristics of samadhi obscure? They obscure both the sign of the object and the sign of the basis. Because the samadhi abides in dependence on any sign, if one falls away from that sign, it will not abide. Among these, initially, seeing the appearance of form without thinking will cause doubt. Relaxing effort will cause non-attention, just as one who does not want to look at forms either closes their eyes or turns their face away. In this way, one will not attend to those forms. Not guarding the doors of the senses, etc., will become the misconduct of the body. Too little sleep or too much indulgence in sleep will cause dullness, becoming drowsiness and sleep. If forms are not seen or not seen completely, one should make great effort for both of these. Because of focusing too intently, one will become too tense. Because of the fault of being too tense, one will become too lax, like squeezing a birdcage to crush a horse. He only wants appearance, but it occurs simultaneously with seeing form. Because he wants one but gets two, like finding two business opportunities, he will become very happy. If suddenly beautiful forms are seen simultaneously in all directions, it will become better than before, like the lungs
