How is it with the ground? It is to enter into meditative absorption closely and closely. How is it with the power of effort? Even if one has not entered closely, one enters into absorption without interruption due to the power of constant habituation. How is it with the power of receiving teachings? One hears many teachings that should be controlled by meditative absorption, and applies "holding" etc. extensively. Relying on these very teachings, one focuses the mind without mixing, with mindfulness and diligence, and cultivating the dharma that is in accordance with the dharma is to enter into meditative absorption. How is it with the power of instructions? Having obtained instructions that are in accordance with the first dhyana or the remainder from any khenpo, acharya, or lama, or anyone else, one attends to that and enters into meditative absorption. Therefore, yogis are of four kinds: those with the power of cause, those with the power of effort, those with sharp faculties, and those with dull faculties. Meditators are these four: meditators who are predominantly attached, meditators who are predominantly views, meditators who are predominantly pride, and meditators who are predominantly doubt. What is a meditator who is predominantly attached? He has not heard that the benefit of entering into meditative absorption is a means of definitely arising from hearing alone. Therefore, he sees it as a great benefit, and through diligence enters into the first dhyana, and after entering in this way, he also experiences the taste. What is a meditator who is predominantly views? Here, some think of themselves as teachers, or that the world is permanent, etc., and that one will become pure in this way, and one will become liberated. Having heard that one should enter into meditative absorption in this way from the first dhyana up to the peak of existence, he relies on that very view and enters into the first dhyana through diligence, and after entering in this way, he also remembers bodies from many eons ago, and he thinks to himself, "I and the world are permanent," and having arisen from that samadhi, he holds onto that very view.

To do it steadfastly, and after that, to think, "I will become pure because of this, I will be liberated, I will definitely be free from suffering," and to think in this way, to think repeatedly, to think very much. Who is the meditator with a strong sense of pride? For example, here someone hears that a certain venerable one can enter into samadhi from the first dhyana up to the peak of existence, and after hearing this, he thinks, "If he can enter into samadhi, why can't I enter into samadhi?" Relying on that pride, with diligence as the cause, he enters into the first dhyana, and after entering into that samadhi, he either becomes arrogant, or while in samadhi, he thinks, "I have attained the ability to enter the first dhyana, but others are not like that." Relying on that pride, he thinks again after that, thinks repeatedly, thinks very much. Thirteenth fascicle. Who is the meditator with a strong sense of doubt? For example, here someone is naturally weak in intelligence and very dull. He previously practiced shamatha-vipassana, and after that, he enters into dhyana. After entering into samadhi in that way, he strives to attain the four noble truths that have not yet been realized. However, because he is weak in intelligence and very dull, he is unable to realize the truth. He also hesitates about the realization of others and is filled with doubt. Relying on that doubt, he thinks again after that, thinks repeatedly.

Or mediocre or sharp faculties, equal afflictions or fewer afflictions, because from other aspects, one engages in samadhi on the first dhyana and experiences its taste, and also hears about the faults and further liberation. Through diligence, one engages in samadhi on the first dhyana, and after engaging in samadhi, one also contemplates those faults and knows further liberation, therefore one does not experience its taste. Then how does one engage in samadhi on the uncontaminated dhyana? For example, here some people follow with faith or follow with Dharma, and are of a nature with fewer afflictions. He initially strives only to realize the four noble truths, or to realize them. He does not contemplate the aspects, characteristics, and signs by which one engages in samadhi on the first dhyana, but contemplates the dharmas that exist in it, from the aggregates of form to the aggregates of consciousness, with aspects such as diseases. Through these formations, the mind becomes disgusted, fearful, and retreats, and also cultivates in the realm of nectar. In this way, one engages in samadhi on the uncontaminated dhyana. Then how does one engage in samadhi that is in accordance with the aspect of decline? It is to believe in those with dull and inferior faculties. He engages in samadhi on the first dhyana through the cause of diligence, but for him, because he cannot bear the joy, pleasure, and benefits, he completely declines from that dhyana. Before he has clarified the senses, the more he engages in samadhi, the more he will only completely decline. Then how does one engage in samadhi that is in accordance with the aspect of abiding? It is a person with medium or sharp faculties, and from hearing about that benefit, one should increase it as it is, just like experiencing the taste. Therefore, by experiencing that taste, he will not tend towards liberation, and he will not completely decline either. Then what is the samadhi that is in accordance with the aspect of transforming into a special division? He also hears about that liberation, and because he does not think that that samadhi is enough, he does not experience the taste either, but strives upwards, and therefore also obtains the special.
