What is the characteristic of grasping? What is the characteristic of experiencing? What is the characteristic of recollecting past actions that have been previously experienced? What is the characteristic of pervasive thought? What is the characteristic of pervasively thinking about future actions? What is the characteristic of simultaneous engagement? What is the characteristic of attending to actions that are currently occurring? What is the characteristic of being afflicted? What is the characteristic of attending to a mind with desire, thinking, "This is a mind with desire," and so on, extensively attending to the characteristic until the mind is not completely liberated? What is the characteristic of being unafflicted? The opposite of that should be understood as the characteristic of being unafflicted. Among these, the separate thoughts about things like desire are for those who have not strived to abandon what has manifested. For those who strive, it is to separately think about things like contraction and discouragement. Among these, being with desire means being in accordance with desire, or being in accordance with what is on its side, the place of bad acquisition. Similarly, all afflicted minds should be understood as appropriate from among the two, entanglement and latent tendencies. Alternatively, the unafflicted should be understood as the antidote to entanglement and latent tendencies. What is the characteristic of proper application? What is the characteristic of attending to the basis of the white side? What is the characteristic of improper application? What is the characteristic of attending to the basis of the dark side? Similarly, from abiding without guarding the doors of the senses to abiding without mindfulness, what is the characteristic of attending to the mind, thinking, "The mind is completely afflicted in this way"? What is the characteristic of appearance? For example, here someone takes the antidote to darkness or the light of the Dharma as a very good, excellent, and extremely apprehended sign, and attends to it well, saying, "As below, so above is the same," etc. This is established as the antidote to the sign of darkness. What is the characteristic of separate thought? Here, a monk takes the characteristic of separate thought itself as a well, excellent, and extremely apprehended sign.

For example, just as standing separately observes sitting, the present grasping separately observes the objects to be grasped in the future; just as sitting observes lying down, the present grasping itself observes the objects to be grasped in the past; just as going forward separately observes coming from behind, the later grasping separately observes the earlier objects to be grasped. In short, by separately examining the objects to be grasped and the grasping, two aspects are shown. What is the sign of excellent samadhi? It is the sign of directing the mind towards that which is dedicated to counteracting desire and attachment. Why is it called excellent? Because the chief of all afflictions is desire, and among all desires, the desire for desire is the most difficult to overcome by all, and it focuses on its antidote, therefore it is called excellent. What is the sign of calm abiding? It is the sign of directing the mind towards the image of non-discrimination. What is the sign of grasping? It is any sign that should be done first, or the sign of grasping the mind with the sign of appearance. What is the sign of insight? It is the sign of directing the mind towards the dharmas with the wisdom arising from hearing, the wisdom arising from thinking, and the wisdom arising from meditation. What is the sign of equanimity? It is the sign of the mind becoming equal towards virtuous things, and especially directing the mind towards equanimity. What is the sign of samadhi? It is with which signs of the base, the object, and what is to be relied upon, one enters into samadhi, or takes the already attained samadhi as a prerequisite. What is the sign of abiding in samadhi? It is that those signs themselves are well held, and because they are well held, one abides in meditative equipoise for as long as one desires, and the dharmas that do not completely degenerate from that samadhi. What is the sign of rising from samadhi? It is anything other than the body of discrimination of the place of meditative equipoise. What is the sign of arising? It is that the samadhi that has been attained, declines, arises, increases, and expands.
