Without having completely subdued it, practicing one aspect of it, and any dharma that corresponds to agitation, such as associating with distraction, will cause the mind to be distracted. What is the characteristic of distraction? As before, the four, such as not guarding the sense doors, as well as investigation and analysis, dull senses, many meanings, many affairs, many ends of activities, the mind not being weary, not knowing the means, not being accustomed to solitude, not liking to focus on the object, associating with noise causing obstacles, and not applying oneself to fully understanding distraction and non-distraction. What is the characteristic of attachment? As before, the four, such as not guarding the sense doors, dull senses, acting on desire, a large portion of afflictions, inappropriate attention, not observing faults, and not observing upward liberation. What should be relied upon should be regarded as the antidotes to those things that should be completely abandoned. Furthermore, there are thirty-two characteristics: the characteristic of one's own mind, the characteristic of the external environment, the characteristic of the basis, the characteristic of the field of activity, the characteristic of attention, the characteristic of generating the mind, the characteristic of abiding, the characteristic of self-nature, the characteristic of the general characteristic, the characteristic of the coarse, the characteristic of the peaceful, the characteristic of experience, the characteristic of universal discrimination, the characteristic of co-emergent activity, the characteristic of being afflicted, the characteristic of not being afflicted, the characteristic of proper application, the characteristic of improper application, the characteristic of appearance, the characteristic of individual discrimination, the characteristic of good samadhi, the characteristic of calm abiding, the characteristic of grasping, the characteristic of insight, the characteristic of equanimity, the characteristic of samadhi, the characteristic of abiding in samadhi, the characteristic of rising from samadhi, the characteristic of arising, the characteristic of separation, the characteristic of means, and the characteristic of actualization. Is the mind thus completely afflicted by defilements? Or is it not completely afflicted by defilements? And, the methods for dealing with mental sinking and so on are these. The four methods for dealing with the absence of sinking and so on are these. Or, in order to prevent the mind from clinging to being completely afflicted by defilements, one must carefully and very attentively observe one's own mind. What is the external sign? Like this, when the mind becomes completely afflicted by defilements, if one recognizes, "My mind has become completely afflicted by defilements," in order to eliminate this complete defilement, and in order to prevent it from arising again, like this, grasp the sign of appearance, or what should be done first, or any other external sign. What is the sign of the basis? What is the body of discrimination of all the five aggregates belonging to the body, together with the seeds? What is the sign of the field of activity? What is the body of discrimination that remembers any object from form to dharma? What is the sign of attention? If there is attention related to that, then in that object, consciousness related to that will arise, therefore, this mind of mine is attention entering the field of activity, it is not without attention, what is the sign of attention that remembers thus. What is the sign of the arising of mind? That which was just said, and, secondly, mind arises from the cause of action, and from the cause of name and form, what is the sign of attention that remembers thus. What is the sign of abiding? The four abodes of consciousness are: consciousness abiding near form, as explained in detail in the sutras, what is the sign of attention that remembers thus. What is the sign of self-nature? The self-nature of one's own lineage, or each one's own self-nature, what is the sign of attention that remembers thus. What is the sign of the general characteristic? The general characteristic of action, or the general characteristic of defilements, or the general characteristic of all dharmas, what is the sign of attention that remembers thus. What is the sign of grossness? What is the sign of viewing the lower ground as gross. What is the sign of peace? Observing the upper ground as the form of peace
