The mental application of distinguishing through faith is that which, from the beginning, distinguishes the Dharma, or first cultivates calm abiding and then distinguishes. The mental application of bringing near to tranquility is that which, from the beginning, places the mind within, or first cultivates insight and then places it. The mental application of cultivating one aspect is that which cultivates one aspect of either calm abiding or insight. The mental application of cultivating both aspects is that which cultivates both in conjunction. Constant mental application is that which arises continuously without interruption at all times. Intense mental application is that which arises from unrelaxed effort. Thus, through the mental application of distinguishing through faith, the vision of wisdom is purified. Through the mental application of bringing near to tranquility, extreme pliancy is generated. Through cultivating one aspect and cultivating both aspects, the mind is liberated from the obscurations. Through constant mental application, time is not wasted. Through intense mental application, direct realization is quickly attained. The mental application arising from accordance is that which accords with abandoning afflictions, and thereby refutes the object of focus. The mental application arising from the antidote is that which abandons afflictions, holds onto abandonment, and distances the lineage from afflictions. The mental application that should be done first is that which cultivates the six recollections or any other object worthy of faith. That which should be individually examined is that which examines whether afflictions have been abandoned, not abandoned, and the abandonment, or that which individually examines what has been realized by oneself or the Dharmas previously examined. Entering with effort is that which belongs to beginners who have not attained mental application. Entering intermittently is that which belongs to those who have attained mental application but whose effort is relaxed. Entering with diligence is that which belongs to those who have initiated effort and whose effort is unrelaxed. Entering naturally is that which occurs at the four times: the time of attaining mental application, and the time of entering equally into the actual practice,

What definitely arises at the time of the realization of those who have entered into equipoise, and at the time of attaining or having attained the state of an Arhat. Differentiating mental engagement is that which belongs to the side of higher seeing. Gathering inwards correctly is that which belongs to the side of calm abiding. Completely purifying obscurations is that by which one abandons the outflows and completely destroys the bad rebirths. Completely purifying the field of activity by the accomplishment of the basis is that by which, having separated from all the bad rebirths of the basis, although one is able to engage in the object, the afflictions do not arise at all. Done by others is like this: the Hearers rely on the sound of others and arise from the internal proper mental engagement. Self-realization is like this: Solitary Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, for the sake of complete and perfect enlightenment without a teacher. Vast mental engagement is like this: Bodhisattvas know the faults of cyclic existence and those that arise from it, belonging to the aspiration for enlightenment. All-pervasive mental engagement is like this: the wisdom of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, is not hidden in all ways, and is endowed with being without obscuration and being correct, and the Bodhisattvas are skilled in the three vehicles, or in the five sciences. Among them, the mental engagement of individually knowing the characteristics is focusing on the Dharma and focusing on the meaning. The other six are only focusing on the meaning. The mental engagements that focus on the body and so on should be known to be included within all seven. Individually knowing the characteristics, and arising from faith, and the result of ultimate union are included by faith and only that mental engagement. The mental engagement of examination is included only by the mental engagement of faith. The remaining three depend on the previous categories, which are only that mental engagement. The others should be known to be applied as appropriate. All seven are for those who are learners and those who are neither learners nor non-learners. The two are non-learners, namely, the place where individually knowing the characteristics is pure, and
