What is the characteristic of attention? What is the characteristic of separation? It is the characteristic of attention that the Samadhi that has already been attained is lost, diminished, and reduced. What is the characteristic of means? There are two: what is the path by which one arises, increases, and expands, or diminishes? What is the characteristic of manifest accomplishment? It is the abbreviation of the meaning of the expanded words and letters, the accomplishment of clairvoyance, the absence of afflictions, the distinct and accurate knowledge, and the knowledge from aspiration. Furthermore, it is the accomplishment of special qualities based on Samadhi, such as strength and fearlessness, or the understanding of profound meanings and words through wisdom. All of these characteristics are included in the four root characteristics: all are included in the characteristic of the object of focus. They are also included in the characteristic of the base, because the latter is clearer than the former, and the base of the latter is the former. Correct application is always the characteristic of the base in all aspects. Just as there is correct application, so too is there incorrect application, and it is the same. One is on the white side, and the other is on the black side. Among them, all the characteristics of affliction should be completely abandoned. The other should be cultivated, and it should be understood what to do in each and every moment. Among them, how does one cultivate attention on the characteristic of the object of focus? Whatever characteristic one attends to, that attention performs four kinds of meaning: relying on that attention itself, and keeping the afflictions that are its opposing side far away. For example, in order to make the latter very clear, is it that attention itself? Or is it something other than that which makes it clear? When relying on that attention, the object of focus is refuted, the afflictions are abandoned, the abandonment is held, and the cause keeps one far away from the afflictions. This is the attention to the characteristic of the object of focus, and that is how one cultivates it. From the first Dhyana up to the peak of existence, one enters into Samadhi in four ways: through the power of cause, the power of application, the power of scriptural authority, and the power of oral instruction. The power of cause
