This is the meaning of striving to attain the ultimate Buddhahood, which is contained within the pure realm of Dharma and the five aggregates. Regarding the three verses that distinguish the four mindfulnesses, one might wonder, after explaining the accumulation of merit, why explain the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment? Because by accumulating merit, one cultivates the factors of enlightenment in order to eliminate the obscurations of afflictions and knowledge. Therefore, there is a connection between explaining the factors of enlightenment after accumulating merit. Among these, the cultivation of the four mindfulnesses is shown through three verses. The wise cultivate mindfulness in fourteen ways, because it is unparalleled, they surpass others (practices). It means that Bodhisattvas cultivate mindfulness in fourteen ways. Because the Shravakas and others do not cultivate in fourteen ways, it is different from the cultivation of the Shravakas and others. Therefore, the Bodhisattva's cultivation of mindfulness surpasses the Shravakas and other (practices). What are the fourteen ways? It mentions "the basis and antidote are completely pure" and so on. These fourteen ways are: the difference of the basis, the difference of the antidote, similarly, the difference of entering, the difference of the object, the difference of attention, the difference of attainment, the difference of accordance, the difference of entering, the difference of knowledge, and also the difference of arising, the difference of measure, the difference of excellence, the difference of cultivation, and the difference of attainment. What is the basis? Such as "hearing the Mahayana" and so on. The Shravaka Sangha cultivates the four mindfulnesses by relying on hearing the three pitakas of the Shravakas, as well as contemplation and wisdom of cultivation. While the Bodhisattva Sangha cultivates the four mindfulnesses by relying on hearing the Dharma of the Mahayana, as well as contemplation and wisdom of cultivation.

Through meditating based on wisdom, there is a difference in the basis. Why is it said to be an antidote? Because it is an antidote to the four inversions, such as impurity and suffering. How does meditating in the manner of an antidote differ from the Shravakas and others? The Shravakas and others meditate on the four non-inversions as an antidote to the four inversions. As an antidote to clinging to purity, they meditate on the impurity of the body, from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet, meditating on pus and blood, and so on. As an antidote to clinging to happiness, they meditate on all feelings as suffering, meditating that any slight feeling is suffering. As an antidote to clinging to permanence, they meditate on the impermanence of the mind, because the mind changes from moment to moment, becoming desirous and hateful. As an antidote to clinging to self, they meditate on the selflessness of all dharmas, because desire and so on cause complete affliction. They meditate that there is no self that is completely afflicted or purified in this. Bodhisattvas are superior to that, because they even realize the selflessness of dharmas in the body and so on. Therefore, it is said that the way Bodhisattvas meditate on impurity and suffering is different. Therefore, as an antidote, they do not grasp and remember the body and feelings as ordinary people do, but like the face of the sky, they realize that the nature of all dharmas is selflessness, so there is a difference in the manner of the antidote. How does one enter? Through the four mindfulnesses, one enters suffering and so on in sequence. So, how does it differ from the Shravakas and others in the way of entering? For example, by practicing mindfulness of the body, one enters the truth of suffering, because by understanding the nature of the body, one realizes that this body is full of many sufferings such as birth, old age, sickness, and death, and thus enters the truth of suffering. By practicing mindfulness of feelings, one understands

I will enter the truth, how to understand it? Experiencing pleasure will become a latent factor of greed; experiencing suffering will become a latent factor of hatred; experiencing neither pleasure nor pain will become a latent factor of ignorance. Like this, these latent factors will become the cause of rebirth in the next life, therefore I will enter the truth of origination. Cultivating mindfulness of mind will enter the truth of cessation, how to understand it? These are just mind, there is nothing called "I". The mind is momentary, seeing it arise and cease by itself, at the time of the truth of cessation, there is nothing called "I", because the fear that will be spoken of will not arise, so I enter the truth of cessation. Cultivating mindfulness of dharma will enter the truth of the path, how to understand it? Seeing that greed and so on are defiled dharmas, which are the cause of samsara; seeing that faith and so on are purified dharmas, which are the cause of nirvana, therefore cultivating faith and so on, so I enter the truth of the path. In order to make oneself and others enter (the truth), that is to say, the hearers cultivate mindfulness in order to let themselves enter the four truths, while the bodhisattvas cultivate the four mindfulnesses equally in order to let both themselves and others enter the four truths, so the way of entering is different. As it is said in the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes, cultivating the four mindfulnesses and entering the four truths should also be viewed as arising from the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes. So, how is it said in the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes? The body is completely occupied by unpleasantness, if you observe it, you will enter the truth of suffering. Among them, unpleasantness is the characteristic of formations (saṃskāra), therefore, unpleasantness is all produced by the suffering of formations, and all that is tainted is suffering. Feeling is the cause of craving, if you observe it, you will enter the truth of origination. The mind is the thing that is attached to the self, if you observe it, you will enter the truth of cessation, I
