A Commentary on the Ornament of the Sutras. Steadfast Intelligence. Commentary on the Ornament of the Sutras. Steadfast Intelligence. In the section titled "Four Verses Differentiating Actions Endowed with Skillful Means," someone asks: After the advice and subsequent teachings, what is the connection in explaining actions gathered by skillful means? Answer: Of the three things mentioned above—"what to learn," "how to learn," and "by whom to learn"—this (the actions being discussed) also falls under the category of "how to learn." Within that, it is also necessary to explain the distinction of what is to be learned. It is also necessary to state what one aims at when learning. Therefore, it is called "the distinction of what is to be learned." So, what is learning? What is the distinction of what is to be learned? Answer: Accomplishing one's own tasks is learning. What is not shared with Hearers (Śrāvakas) and others is the distinction. Accomplishing one's own tasks also has two aspects: common and distinct. Among these, the common aspect is engaging in actions of body and so forth without perversion. This is precisely the action gathered by skillful means, because this action pervades all actions that manifestly generate virtuous deeds, it is called "common." The distinct aspect is accomplishing the six perfections (Pāramitās), which will be explained later. Gardens, mountains, sentient beings, and rivers, All abide on the earth as they are. Likewise, generosity and other virtues, In short, the wise say actions arise from the three. This verse indicates the means by which virtues arise. For example, gardens, mountains, sentient beings (i.e., living beings), and rivers all abide on the great earth, relying on the earth and arising from the earth. Similarly, in short, the body, speech, and mind of wise Bodhisattvas are purified, and the Dharma of generosity and other perfections, as well as the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment and other Dharmas, abide in them and arise from the three types of actions. In the analogy, four meanings are revealed: enjoyment, the enjoyer, stability, and instability. Among these, mentioning gardens indicates the object of enjoyment. As it is also said in the Sutra: "The Bhagavan dwells in the Jeta Grove." Mentioning sentient beings indicates the enjoyer. Mentioning beings and mountains indicates stability. Mentioning rivers indicates

It shows impermanence. In short, it can be summarized into two types: mountains and gardens show stable things, sentient beings and rivers show impermanent things. If divided into sentient and non-sentient, then sentient beings belong to the category of sentient beings. Gardens, mountains, and rivers do not belong to the category of sentient beings. Now, two verses show the method of arising, that is, the method of arising from two situations. The two situations refer to arising from being tired of the Mahayana, and arising from falling into other vehicles. Various natures, bahukalpaiḥ niṣpannam (বহুকল্পৈঃ নিস্পন্নম্, বহুকল্পৈঃ নিস্পন্নম্, accomplished by countless eons), the extremely difficult task, the nature of diligence, the characteristics of body, speech, and mind, for these tasks, the sons of the victors will not be completely discouraged. This is to say that for the benefit and purpose of sentient beings, Bodhisattvas, in order to perfect the accumulation of merit and wisdom, through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, give external wealth, such as children, wealth, etc., and internal wealth, such as head, hands, feet, eyes, and other precious limbs, this is called various natures. Even so, if you only practice with years and months, you will not perfect the accumulation of merit and wisdom. If you practice and give for countless eons, then you will initially perfect the accumulation of merit and wisdom, and finally perfect it, so it is called accomplished by countless eons. Like this, before reaching this level, the nature of diligence in difficult tasks is not a Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha, or worldly person, but a Bodhisattva, this is the meaning. Like this, even if you practice and engage in extremely difficult tasks with the characteristics of body, speech, and mind, the sons of the victors, the Bodhisattvas, will not be discouraged, will not weaken their diligence, and will not feel tired, this is the meaning. Why? Because of long-term practice. If you are accustomed to the Mahayana for a long time, then you will become the nature and essence of the Mahayana itself. Other sutras also say that because of the previous habit of virtuous dharmas, a similar mature result will appear, just like that.
