Just as unclean places cause discomfort and death, similarly, the actions of body, speech, and mind, if dedicated to evil destinies, will be the same. Because dedicating to evil destinies exhausts the roots of virtue in evil destinies and severs the roots of virtue for attaining great Bodhi. For the Great Vehicle, it cuts off the roots of virtue, does not generate ungenerated roots of virtue, destroys generated roots of virtue, and becomes an obstacle to attaining perfect Buddhahood. Therefore, actions dedicated to evil destinies are like poison and weapons, cutting off the roots of virtue. How does it cut off the roots of virtue? For example, if a weapon cuts off the root of a tree, leaves, trunk, flowers, and fruits will not grow. Similarly, if one practices virtue through the doors of body, etc., but dedicates it to two evil destinies, it cuts off the root of great Bodhi—the mind of Bodhi. If the root and sprout of the mind of Bodhi are cut off, then the perfections, like leaves, the ten grounds, like the trunk, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, like flowers, and the great Bodhi, endowed with qualities such as strength and fearlessness, like fruit, will not arise, so know it to be like a weapon. Just as poison prevents crops from growing where it falls, if virtuous actions are dedicated to evil destinies, the ungenerated roots of virtue of the Great Vehicle will not arise, so it is like poison. Just as hail destroys and eliminates grown grains and crops, if one practices virtue through the three actions but dedicates it to evil destinies, the generated roots of virtue of the Great Vehicle will be destroyed and eliminated, so it is like hail. Just as an enemy creates obstacles and hindrances to enjoyment and various virtuous deeds, if one practices virtue through the three doors but dedicates it to evil destinies, it becomes an obstacle to attaining perfect Buddhahood, such as obtaining the perfect bliss, strength, and fearlessness, etc., of the Blessed One Buddha, so it is like an enemy, and that is its meaning. The fourth verse speaks of the method of purifying the three actions.

Therefore, it is stated that there is no object of contemplation or examination regarding the three: the agent, the action, and the effect of the action. The agent is the Bodhisattva himself. However, there is no object of contemplation on "existence." Why? Because one realizes the absence of self in the person, so one does not think of it as "existing." This is its meaning. The action is the Dharma to be accomplished, the six perfections. For this, too, there is no object of contemplation on "existence." The effect of the action is the diligence by which one accomplishes the perfections, and for this, too, there is no object of contemplation on "existence." Why? Because one realizes the absence of self in phenomena, so one does not think of them as "existing." This is its meaning. Therefore, "His action, this pure transcendence, goes to the infinite, for it is grasped by skillful means." Regarding this, therefore, the Bodhisattva does not contemplate or cling to the three: the agent, the action, and the effect of the action. This is because those three actions of the Bodhisattva are pure. Why? Because they are seized by the skillful means of non-contemplative wisdom, therefore it is called pure action. By that action, one goes to the other shore of infinite qualities, that is, the nature of Buddhahood that is not exhausted even at the end of samsara. This is its meaning. The chapter on action endowed with skillful means is complete. The verse summarizing the divisions of the perfections, regarding this, after explaining the chapter on action endowed with skillful means, what is the connection of explaining the chapter on the perfections? Earlier, two trainings were mentioned, common and special. Among them, the common training has been explained in the chapter on action endowed with skillful means. The question is, the manifestation of virtuous actions pervades everything. Now, the special is to be spoken, therefore it is to be explained. The special training is that which benefits the accumulation of the collection of the Buddha's Dharma of oneself, and that is done by the perfections. The perfections pervade all the virtues of one's own continuum, and that will be explained later. From that arises the number, and if one accomplishes it, one will be completely liberated. If one is liberated, one can also liberate others. Therefore, for the sake of benefiting oneself, the perfections are explained first.
