The accumulation of wisdom of the earth should be viewed as the extent of the sky within that which has been eaten by mustard seed insects. The accumulation of merit of a Bodhisattva should be viewed as the water of the four great oceans. The accumulation of merit of a Hearer should be viewed as the water of a cow's hoofprint, it is said. This shows what is the accumulation. 'One arises from all samsara,' In this statement, one refers to the accumulation of merit. The accumulation of merit causes birth in samsara, and even in samsara, it obtains the complete abundance of wealth of Indra, Brahma, and the Wheel-Turning King, who are superior to all sentient beings, this is the meaning. 'The other is afflicted in samsara,' In this statement, other than the accumulation of merit refers to the accumulation of wisdom. The accumulation of wisdom, as thought for the benefit of sentient beings, when born in samsara, is not stained by the faults of samsara, and is not subject to the power of karma and afflictions, this is the meaning. This shows why accumulations are gathered. Now, in order to show that the two accumulations are gathered by the six perfections, or that the six perfections are gathered by the two accumulations, one verse is spoken, namely 'Giving, discipline, merit,' etc. Among them, the first perfection of giving and the second perfection of discipline among the six perfections are called the accumulation of merit. Why is that? Because giving causes great wealth to arise. Discipline causes the attainment of the bodies of gods and humans. 'The accumulation of wisdom is wisdom,' In this statement, the last perfection of wisdom is called the accumulation of wisdom. Because it realizes the emptiness of all phenomena, and is not stained by afflictions. 'The other three are two,' In this statement, patience, diligence, and meditation are established as two accumulations, both established as the accumulation of merit and also established as the accumulation of wisdom. How is it? The two, patience that does not mind harm and that experiences suffering, are gathered into the accumulation of merit. Patience that definitely ascertains the Dharma is gathered into the accumulation of wisdom.
