Furthermore, it is intended to abandon the aggregates of afflictions such as desire and hatred, not to actually kill one's parents. It is not right to interpret the words directly in this way. The third reliance is that the Bhagavan said that a person who is a Sravaka, a person who is an Arhat, a person who is a Pratyekabuddha, and one person who appears in the world benefits and brings happiness to all the world. Who is it? It is the Tathagata. If one wrongly understands this and wrongly interprets it as meaning that a person exists, it is to prevent this error that it is said. Therefore, rely on the sutras of definitive meaning, not on the sutras of provisional meaning. Among them, saying that a person exists is provisional meaning, and saying that a person does not exist is definitive meaning. Saying that a person does not exist, the Bhagavan also extensively taught in other sutras, such as "Eye consciousness arises in dependence on the eye and form," etc. It is only here that one speaks of sentient beings, self, and person, but in reality, a person does not exist. The fourth reliance is to prevent attachment to consciousness, which has the habit of grasping and being grasped, and which generates conceptual thoughts about objects such as blue and yellow, and which has defilements and is the cause of samsara, as being the nature of non-conceptual wisdom. Therefore, it is said to rely on wisdom, not on consciousness. Because of faith and proper conduct, and because of hearing truthfully from others, wise people do not decline from inexpressible wisdom. This verse shows the qualities of the four reliances. The first reliance shows the quality of not declining because of having faith in the Dharma spoken by the Buddha himself. One does not slander the scriptures by saying that they are not the Buddha's teachings, or that they are mistaken, but believes that they were spoken by the Buddha himself, and therefore one does not increase non-merit, so one does not decline. The second reliance is that, regarding killing one's father and mother, etc., from the four hidden intentions and the four hidden meanings, killing one's father and mother, etc., is something that should be avoided even in the world, the Tathagata.

In the profound scriptures, it is said that if one kills one's father and mother, one can attain Buddhahood. This is not the literal meaning. Rather, there is another profound meaning. If one understands its profound meaning with one's own wisdom and practices accordingly, one will not fall. Why? If one clings to the literal meaning and misunderstands its profound meaning, one will fall. If one does not distort its profound meaning, one can avoid falling. Relying on the third refuge, if I do not understand the teachings of emptiness and selflessness, I must abandon arrogance and ask those who understand their meaning about the principles of selflessness and emptiness. If I listen, I will understand the sutras of ultimate meaning, and therefore I will not fall. Relying on the fourth refuge, in order to attain non-conceptual wisdom, one must strive and not rely on or cling to various consciousnesses. In this way, one can realize transcendental wisdom, and therefore one will not fall. In the "Verses of Fourfold Perfect Discernment," after explaining the four reliances, why explain the four perfect discernments? Because possessing the four reliances makes one a refuge for worldly people. Through the four perfect discernments, one can teach the Dharma for the benefit of sentient beings. Therefore, there is a connection between explaining the four reliances and then explaining the four perfect discernments. "The Bodhisattva is unequaled, the four perfect discernments." The four perfect discernments of Bodhisattvas are: perfect discernment of Dharma, perfect discernment of meaning, perfect discernment of definitive words, and perfect discernment of eloquence. The four perfect discernments of Bodhisattvas are more excellent and superior to the four perfect discernments of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and therefore are called "unequaled." "Names, characteristics, definitions, and words, wisdom and knowledge are those." Understanding how many names there are for one Dharma, and how many categories of good and non-good Dharmas there are for all Dharmas, is called perfect discernment of Dharma. Regarding the names of Dharmas,
