Thus, one cultivates and enters. This is the fourth characteristic. If the four characteristics arising from shame and embarrassment appear, it should be understood that shame and embarrassment have been obtained. Cultivating embarrassment is primary, with one's own mind devoted to the Dharma, thought and unified action, non-discrimination and oneness. This verse explains how cultivating embarrassment and knowing shame is the supreme and primary cultivation. For example, for the Buddha Bhagavan, offering external objects such as incense, garlands, and unguents, is not as supreme as offering with the mind, such as listening and contemplating. Similarly, giving rise to shame out of concern for others' criticism and regard for others is not supreme. Rather, looking to one's own mind, thinking of oneself being ashamed of oneself, and thereby giving rise to knowing shame, such cultivation of shame is the most supreme cultivation. Cultivating shame with the mind also has five aspects: devotion to the Dharma, thought, unified action, non-discrimination, and abiding in oneness. Among these, devotion to the Dharma refers to praising and having faith in the Mahayana Dharma, which is completely embraced by shame and embarrassment. Such cultivation is also the most supreme cultivation. Thought has nine aspects: tasting, rejoicing, delighting, being contentless, abandoning, rejoicing, benefiting,

As it is said, what is the connection between explaining the occasion of steadfastness after shame? The main thing among the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment to be cultivated and the subsequent corresponding dharmas is knowing shame. Thus, when a Bodhisattva who possesses the knowledge of shame engages in cultivation, the three qualities of diligence, samadhi, and wisdom, which are not afflicted by the three afflictions of laziness, distraction, and immoral wisdom, arise as steadfastness and bravery. Since that steadfastness also arises from and is accomplished through the knowledge of shame, there is a connection between explaining the occasion of steadfastness after shame. Or, a Bodhisattva who possesses shame and embarrassment cannot be moved by the winds of afflictions such as desire and hatred. Therefore, there is a connection between explaining the occasion of steadfastness after shame. The steadfastness of a Bodhisattva is: its nature and its distinctions, and its immutability, and other than that, it surpasses all. This verse briefly shows the meaning of the various classifications of the steadfastness of a Bodhisattva. In this chapter on steadfastness, it also shows three aspects of the meaning of the steadfastness of a Bodhisattva: the nature of steadfastness, the distinctions of steadfastness, and the immutability of steadfastness. Among these, worldly people also have steadfastness, and Hearers and Solitary Buddhas also have steadfastness, but compared to their steadfastness, the nature, distinctions, and immutability of the steadfastness of a Bodhisattva are more excellent and surpassing. That is the meaning. Diligence, samadhi, and wisdom, and a mind that does not waver are called steadfastness. A pure Bodhisattva arises from the three fearlessnesses. This explains the three aspects of nature, synonyms for the name of nature, and the establishment of nature. Among these, what is called steadfastness is also named for those three dharmas: diligence, samadhi, and wisdom. Among these, rejoicing in virtuous dharmas and not turning back is diligence. Single-mindedly cultivating the Four Noble Truths and not being moved by the winds of conceptual thought is samadhi. All dharmas
