Therefore, Bodhisattvas rely on the excellence of having the garment of shame and embarrassment. Ordinary people cover and wrap their bodies with clothes to hide their unsightly bodies and to prevent dust and the like from contaminating their bodies. Although external impurities are obvious, because they have no shame or embarrassment, their inner minds are stained with impurities such as attachment, so their bodies are not without impurities. The garment of the king's son (Bodhisattva) is shame, and even if it is not covered, it is free from the defilement of faults. The garments of the king's sons, the Bodhisattvas, are shame and embarrassment. When they are meditating, they do not have good clothes, and even if they wear old rags, they cover themselves because of shame and embarrassment. They are not defiled by impurities such as attachment and hatred, as well as killing and stealing, so they are called undefiled. Furthermore, even if they are covered with clothes, etc., the meaning of this verse is that ordinary people cover themselves with clothes such as coarse cloth other than the garment of shame, and although they are not defiled by external impurities such as dust, because they are without shame and embarrassment, they are always defiled by internal impurities such as attachment and hatred. The prince with a sense of shame is like the sky, and will not be defiled by the Dharma. This verse shows that shame and embarrassment are like the sky. For example, just as the sky is pure in nature and is not defiled by impurities such as clouds and fog, the Dharma of shame and embarrassment is also pure in nature, just like the sky. Therefore, Bodhisattvas who have a sense of shame and embarrassment are not defiled by the eight worldly dharmas such as gain and loss, fame and infamy when they are engaged in activities such as begging for alms. Even if they gain, they do not generate joy, and even if they do not gain, they do not generate displeasure. The princes who rely on and associate with are like beauty adorned with shame. This verse shows that shame and embarrassment are like adornments. For example, some people use various kinds of adornments
