I generate compassion by focusing on what is not me. Why? Because I see that all three feelings are pervaded by suffering. In this case, for the feeling of pleasure, it is focused on being pervaded by the suffering of change. For the feeling of suffering, it is focused on being pervaded by the suffering of suffering. For the feeling that is neither pleasure nor suffering, it is focused on being pervaded by the suffering of conditioning. The cause of the feeling of suffering and pleasure is displeasure and pleasure, because it is for the sake of generating that field. The cause of generating the feeling of suffering, and the cause of generating the feeling of pleasure, refers to the latent tendencies of the feeling of pleasure and the latent tendencies of the feeling of suffering. In reality, the nature of the habit of the feeling that is neither pleasure nor suffering is said to be its cause. Why is latency called a cause? Because in this way, from that habit, the two feelings of pleasure and suffering repeatedly arise and occur. This is called the verses on the nature of great compassion. Although worldly people have compassion, they only generate compassion for their parents, children, relatives, and friends, and do not generate compassion for enemies, etc., so it is not great compassion. Although Hearers and Solitary Buddhas have compassion, they only generate compassion for suffering beings and do not generate compassion for happy beings, so it is not great compassion. Bodhisattvas, however, regard all feelings, no matter what they are, as suffering, and just as they generate compassion for the hell beings in the Avici hell, they also generate compassion for the gods at the peak of existence, so they are called having the nature of great compassion. The meaning is to compose a verse to show that. The compassion of the Bodhisattva should be known to be equal. The compassion of the Bodhisattvas should be known to be the compassion that equally focuses on all beings. How is it equal? Whether experiencing the feeling of pleasure, or the feeling of suffering, or the feeling of neither pleasure nor suffering, etc., no matter what is felt, all feelings are suffering.

Knowing the suffering, just as one has love for the hell beings, one also has love for the beings at the peak of existence, therefore it should be understood as great compassion. What is equal to what? Therefore, it is said in the sutra: 'From its equal thought, practice and detachment, absence of characteristics and purity.' It means that equality is equal compassion because of equal thought, equal compassion because of equal practice, equal compassion because of being free from desire, equal compassion because of being without characteristics, and equal compassion because of attaining purity. Among them, equal thought and equal compassion are like having love for the hell beings, and also having love for the beings at the peak of existence. Equal practice and equal compassion are like protecting the hell beings, and also protecting the beings at the peak of existence in the same way. Being free from desire and equal compassion is because one has abandoned the opposite of compassion, such as hatred and harming actions like beating beings, therefore there is no hatred for anyone, and no favoritism for anyone, because one looks at everything equally. Absence of characteristics and equal compassion is because beings, self, and compassion are all realized as emptiness, with the same taste. Attaining purity and equal compassion is because the bodhisattvas on the eighth ground have attained the tolerance of non-arising dharmas, and compassion is naturally accomplished without effort or exertion. Furthermore, the gods of the form realm also cultivate the four immeasurables such as love, and the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas also cultivate the immeasurables, but in order to show that the bodhisattvas' cultivation of the four immeasurables is more excellent, a verse is said, namely 'Having faith in one's own mind and the Dharma' and so on. If the habit of cultivating love in previous lives has moistened the mind, and relying on that mind, one cultivates love and so on in this life, then that cultivation will be regarded as excellent. If one generates faith and belief in the sutras that are fully in accordance with the four immeasurables, then cultivating love and so on will be regarded as excellent. Thought and appearance
