of the Dharma's origin. After showing the subsequent results, now, in order to show that without compassion, patience and other subsequent merits will not arise, but will regress, it is said: "If the root of compassion does not exist, there will be no difficult practices or patience." and so on. For example, if the root of a tree does not exist, the trunk will not exist. If the trunk does not exist, the branches will not exist. If the branches do not exist, the leaves will not exist. If the leaves do not exist, the flowers will not exist. If the flowers do not exist, the fruits will not exist. Similarly, for the Bodhisattva's tree of compassion, if there is no compassion as the root, then for the sake of sentient beings, the difficult practices of inner and outer suffering, and the patience to endure all of this, which is like the trunk, will not exist, that is its meaning. "If a wise person cannot endure suffering, how can they think of benefiting sentient beings?" For this sentence, if patience, which is like the trunk, does not exist, and one cannot endure suffering, then the thought of benefiting sentient beings, which is like a branch, how can it exist? That thought will also disappear, that is its meaning. "Wisdom that has abandoned thought does not ripen into a good future life." For this sentence, if one abandons the thought of thinking for sentient beings, one will not pray that for the sake of sentient beings, one can be born in those good future lives. Therefore, prayers like leaves will not arise. Even if one prays like this, one will not be born in a good future life. Therefore, being born in a good future life, like a flower, will not arise. "If one does not obtain a good future life, one cannot fully ripen sentient beings." For this sentence, if one does not obtain a good future life like a flower, one cannot fully ripen sentient beings. Therefore, fully ripening sentient beings, which is like a fruit, will not exist, that is its meaning. Just as when the roots of a tree are moistened with water, the roots become firm and lush, and consequently the trunk and so on also grow, here also, two verses are used to show what is the water that nourishes and strengthens the great compassion that is the root. The water of compassion is loving-kindness, suffering and happiness are vast.

Such as increase, etc., are mentioned. For example, just as the roots of a tree grow and flourish when moistened with water, so too, when the root of compassion is moistened with the water of loving-kindness, the root of compassion becomes firm and grows. From this, patience, which is like the trunk of a tree, and so on, also become firm and grow. This is the meaning. How so? Bodhisattvas who possess loving-kindness, when moistened with compassion, which is like the water of loving-kindness, compassion will increase. As compassion increases, bodhisattvas, seeing the suffering of others, themselves feel suffering. Thus, the suffering that arises from engaging in the benefit of sentient beings is not suffering, but great happiness. Therefore, there is nothing that cannot be endured, and thus one possesses patience like the trunk of a tree. The increase mentioned here refers to patience. Branches grow and diverge, which should be understood as proper attention. That is to say, the meaning of the Great Vehicle lies in the selflessness of persons and phenomena, and thinking of the benefit of oneself and others, which is called proper attention. Therefore, thought should be regarded as growing and diverging like branches. The stream of aspiration has not ceased, leaves fall and new ones grow. Just as trees shed old leaves and new leaves grow and are maintained, bodhisattvas abandon the small aspirations and small births previously made, and then continuously accept and maintain great aspirations and great births. Thus, abandoning the former aspirations and accepting the latter, this continuous state is like old leaves falling and new leaves growing. Because the arising of conditions is accomplished in two ways, flowers do not wither, and from this, fruit is produced. Just as trees are also accomplished by two kinds of arising, namely, the accomplishment of internal arising and the accomplishment of external arising. Among these, the accomplishment of internal arising refers to the trunk arising from the roots, the branches arising from the trunk, and so on. Similarly, the tree of compassion of a bodhisattva, because the internal arising—aspiration—is fully accomplished, their own excellent birth is fully ripened.
