Having abandoned all aspects that are incompatible with the latent tendencies of violence and hatred, one is thus free from attachment, and therefore it is established as great compassion. The term "non-objectifying" means that those who have attachment and diligent effort are not compassionate. The bodhisattvas of the eighth ground have attained tolerance of the unborn dharma, and therefore non-conceptualization is spontaneously accomplished. Since there is no objectification of self and other, and without diligence and effort, compassion arises spontaneously, therefore it is established as great compassion. Likewise, those who do not have compassion are not enlightened. This means that, as mentioned above, because there is no equality, those who do not have the compassion of non-objectification are not bodhisattvas. In order to show compassion like a tree, there are five verses, meaning that from here on, five verses use the analogy of a tree to show it as being like a tree of compassion. Just as a tree has roots, a trunk, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits, it shows what the roots, trunk, branches, leaves, and flowers, and fruits of the tree of compassion are. "Compassion, patience, and thought, aspiration, arising, maturing beings, this is the tree of compassion." The meaning is that the root of the tree of compassion is the great compassion of the bodhisattva, the trunk is patience, the branches are thinking of the benefit of sentient beings, the leaves are aspiration, arising is the flower, and making sentient beings mature is the fruit. "The root is large, etc., the supreme of great fruit." The meaning is that for the tree of compassion, compassion itself is the root, so the root is large. In the word "etc.," patience becomes the trunk, so add "the trunk is large," and so on. Finally, because it completely matures sentient beings, it is the supreme fruit. The meaning is that it is the place of the root, trunk, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit. For example, from the good root of a tree, the trunk arises, from the trunk the branches arise, and from the branches the leaves arise.

From the trunk, flowers emerge. From the flowers, fruits emerge. Similarly, for the tree of the Bodhisattva's great compassion, great compassion itself should be placed in the position of the root. Because the root of all the Bodhisattva's qualities is great compassion. Therefore, in the Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence, it is also said: 'Furthermore, son of Sharadvati, the great compassion of the Bodhisattva is also inexhaustible. Why? Because it precedes. Son of Sharadvati, just as exhaling and inhaling breath precedes the life force of a person. Similarly, for the sake of perfectly accomplishing the Great Vehicle, the great compassion of the Bodhisattva precedes.' In the Sutra of the Peak of Gaya, it is also said: 'The root of the Bodhisattva's mind of enlightenment is great compassion, and the object is sentient beings.' Those who have great compassion can endure various kinds of suffering for the sake of sentient beings. Those who do not have great compassion will not endure various kinds of suffering for the sake of sentient beings. Therefore, from compassion arises the endurance of cold, heat, and so on for the sake of sentient beings. Endurance is like the position of the trunk. Thus, with the strength of endurance like a trunk, with the thought of liberating sentient beings, the thought of contemplating various aspects arises, and this thought is like the position of the branches. Thus, from the thought of contemplating the benefit of sentient beings, wherever one is born in life after life, one makes the aspiration to be born with a perfect body, resources, retinue, and place that will benefit sentient beings, and this aspiration is like the position of the leaves. Thus, with the strength of aspiration like leaves, wherever one is born in life after life, one is born in a good place that will benefit oneself and others, and taking a good rebirth is like the position of the flowers. Thus, from taking a good rebirth, the act of fully maturing sentient beings arises, and this is like the position of the fruit. Thus, in one verse, it is explained that if there is great compassion, then endurance and so on can arise from great compassion.
