The intermediate contemplation is to contemplate all faults. To contemplate all virtues is to have love and compassion for sentient beings, which is a part of the Bodhisattva that is in accordance with compassion, so it is to contemplate virtues. Or, as mentioned above, all those faults are: love and so on do not arise, benefiting sentient beings without afflictions, and not abandoning samsara. To contemplate in this way is to contemplate virtues. "Having the aspect of having practiced it before," means that having been accustomed to great compassion in previous lives, wherever one is born, one will have compassion due to the power of previous habit, which is called compassion arising from completely practicing in other lives. "In order to abandon unfavorable factors and obtain purity," means that the unfavorable factors of compassion are harmful thoughts and harm, etc. If those are abandoned, pure compassion will be obtained. "Pure" means that one obtains compassion free from attachment, in which attachment and hatred do not arise towards anything. "Without equality, not constant, not a compassionate one," means that not having equal compassion is not having great compassion, such as the compassion of ordinary beings, Hearers, and Solitary Buddhas. Those are those who generate compassion for sentient beings who are overwhelmed by the feeling of suffering, but do not generate compassion for sentient beings who have feelings of happiness and neither happiness nor suffering, therefore there is no compassion of equality. Bodhisattvas regard all those who experience a little happiness, a little suffering, and a little neither happiness nor suffering as suffering, just as they generate compassion for the sentient beings in the Avici hell. They also generate compassion for the sentient beings born in the peak of existence, because they generate compassion for all sentient beings in the three realms, so the compassion of Bodhisattvas is equality, therefore it is established as great compassion. Sometimes there is an interval, and sometimes there is no interval, impermanent compassion is compassion.

Those who do not possess greatness, like the compassion of a Pratyekabuddha. Their residue, if entered into the realm of nirvana without residue, will be exhausted, therefore it is not permanent. The compassion of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, even if entered into the realm of nirvana without residue, will not be exhausted, therefore it is permanent. Therefore, it is established as great compassion. Those who do not have a partial mind, for whom self and other are equal, and have not attained a partial mind, they do not possess great compassion, like Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. They have not understood the selflessness of phenomena, therefore they have not attained the mind of equality between self and other. Bodhisattvas, up to entering the first bhumi, have attained the mind of equality between self and other, and like themselves, liberate sentient beings from suffering, therefore they abide in a partial mind, and therefore it is established as great compassion. "Also acting" is connected with "not". For whom, seeing sentient beings suffering, there is only compassion in the mind, but does not act to save them from suffering, then they do not possess great compassion, like noble Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. They know that sentient beings are suffering, but do not act to save them from suffering. Bodhisattvas know that sentient beings are suffering, and also act to save them from suffering, therefore it is established as great compassion. "Free from attachment", for whom, although there is compassion, but hatred and harm, which are contrary to compassion, exist together, and have not abandoned the latent tendencies of hatred and harm, then they are not called great compassion, like ordinary beings and Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Among them, ordinary beings, although some have compassion, hatred arises at that very moment, and although there is compassion for friends, there is hatred for enemies. Noble Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not actually generate hatred, but have not abandoned the subtle latent tendencies of hatred. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, on the other hand,
