Thus. Abandoning attainment and non-attainment, and experiencing great suffering in the mind, it shows the faults of this life and future lives. In this life, falling away from attaining the four immeasurables, and experiencing great suffering in body and mind, this is the fault of this life. In future lives, not attaining the four immeasurables, and harm arising to body and mind, this is the fault of future lives. Having shown the many faults of the unfavorable side in this way, now it shows the virtues. Virtue is the absence of faults, and not abandoning samsara for the sake of sentient beings. To show this, it says, "All these faults, do not arise in those abiding in loving-kindness, etc." The faults mentioned above, such as harming oneself and harming others, do not arise in those who abide in loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. This shows the absence of faults. "Because of being without afflictions, for sentient beings, they do not abandon samsara." Those who possess wisdom, even dwelling in samsara, are not stained by the faults of samsara, such as attachment and hatred, and therefore are called without afflictions. This shows not dwelling in samsara. "Because of possessing compassion, for sentient beings, they do not abandon samsara." Because of possessing compassion, for the sake of sentient beings, they do not abandon samsara, which shows not dwelling in Nirvana. For example, two lines of verse show not abandoning samsara for the sake of sentient beings. "Like the sons of the Buddhas, with loving-kindness, etc., towards sentient beings, a single son with virtues, all sentient beings are not like that." This one line of verse extensively shows the loving-kindness, etc., of the Bodhisattva. Just as Bodhisattvas treat all sentient beings with loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, acting with love, benefit, and happiness, even parents towards a single son who is virtuous, good, and wise, do not generate such thoughts of love and care. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas treat all sentient beings in this way, but all sentient beings do not do likewise.

Even if love and compassion, etc., are combined into one, it will not merely produce the love and compassion of one Bodhisattva. Regarding "the divisions of compassion and its object," etc., in order to explain how many kinds of divisions there are in the compassion of a Bodhisattva, and what the object of the Bodhisattva's compassion is, that is, what is the object to be aimed at, two verses are composed. The object to be aimed at by the compassion of a Bodhisattva is ten kinds of sentient beings. In this way, compassion can also be divided into ten kinds. Regarding "extremely burning," etc., the sentient beings of the desire realm who are attached to the qualities of the five desires are called "extremely burning." For them, the Bodhisattva thinks: Alas, these sentient beings are burned by the fire of desire and have lost their autonomy. The Bodhisattva's compassion arises greatly. Regarding "fallen into the hands of the enemy," etc., those who have entered the path of virtue but are controlled by demons, give up doing good, and are obstructed are called "fallen into the hands of the enemy." For them, the Bodhisattva thinks: Alas, these sentient beings are controlled by demons and have lost their autonomy. The Bodhisattva generates great compassion. Regarding "tormented by suffering," etc., those sentient beings who are born in the three lower realms such as hell are called "tormented by suffering." For them, the Bodhisattva thinks: Alas, these sentient beings are tormented by various sufferings of Avici hell, how pitiful! Thus, great compassion arises. Regarding "obscured by darkness," etc., butchers and hunters, etc., who are attached to the path of killing, etc., because they do not see that from this and its causes, they will be born in hell, etc., in the future, are called "obscured by darkness." For them, the Bodhisattvas think: These sentient beings are attached to evil deeds such as killing, and will fall into the three lower realms in the future. The Bodhisattva generates great compassion. Regarding "those who have entered the evil path," etc., those who have cut off their lineage, who have the nature of not being able to completely escape from suffering, are called "those who have entered the evil path," because they are always born only in samsara. They...
