It should be established as small. The so-called "inferior mind" is that the minds of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas are small minds, and their immeasurable qualities should also be established as small, which is its meaning. The so-called "with effort" is that the immeasurable qualities from the first bhumi up to the seventh bhumi are called "with effort" because they involve effort and diligence, and these should also be established as small, which is its meaning. The so-called "these are inferior, others are superior" means that all those who are not in meditative equipoise, as well as the small, medium, lower bhumis, inferior mind, and with effort of those in meditative equipoise, if these six are established as inferior, then everything contrary to them will become superior. How so? The ground of non-meditative equipoise is established as inferior, and all those in meditative equipoise are established as superior and great. Among those in meditative equipoise, the small, medium, inferior, and great are all established as superior. The lower ground is established as inferior, and all the lower grounds are established as superior. The inferior mind is established as inferior, and the immeasurable qualities of the great compassion of Bodhisattvas and Tathagatas are established as superior. Those with effort on the seventh ground are established as small, and the immeasurable qualities of those who have attained the tolerance of non-arising dharma from the eighth ground onwards are established as superior. Now, with two verses, the three aspects of the cause, effect, and characteristics of the immeasurable are shown. "By abiding in the Brahma-viharas," this shows the cause, that if one abides in and cultivates the four immeasurables of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, one will attain five kinds of results, which is its meaning. The five kinds of results are: the result of complete maturation, the result of dominance, the result of manly strength, the result of correspondence to the cause, and the result of separation. "The wise are born in the realm of desire," meaning that cultivating the four immeasurables should result in birth in the form realm, but Bodhisattvas, possessing inconceivable samadhi, intentionally take birth in the desire realm for the sake and benefit of sentient beings, which is the result of complete maturation. "Thereby perfecting all accumulations," meaning that Bodhisattvas, cultivating the four immeasurables, by that power can perfect the accumulations of merit and the accumulations of wisdom.

It will be perfected, that is the fruit of freedom. Called maturing sentient beings, bodhisattvas with the four immeasurables, for those sentient beings who have not entered this teaching, cause them to enter the teaching, and for those who have entered the teaching, arrange them in order to fully mature them, this is the fruit of the power of a man. The power of a man will not arise without the distinction of diligence, and because the distinction of diligence can cause sentient beings to fully mature, therefore it is established as the fruit of the power of a man. Always inseparable from Brahma. It means that if a bodhisattva cultivates the four immeasurables in this life, wherever he is born in future lives, he will have the four immeasurables, and he will never be separated from the four immeasurables at all times, that is the fruit that is the same as the cause. Among them, the meaning of being the same as the cause is also that whatever cause is planted, the fruit will be born in the same way, for example, if you give alms in this life, you will also like to give alms in other lives. Abandoning its contradictory aspects. It means that the contradictory aspects of the four immeasurables are harmful thoughts, harm, displeasure, and greed and anger. If you have the four immeasurables, you will not have these four, so it is called abandoning the contradictory aspects, that is the fruit of separation. Non-vigilance, by its strong conditions, will not be transformed. This is to indicate the characteristics, called non-vigilance, that is, the antidote of the contradictory aspects of the four immeasurables, such as harmful thoughts, etc., loving-kindness, etc., is not manifested, called non-vigilance, even if the antidote is not manifested, even if the strong conditions for the arising of harmful thoughts and harm, etc., arise, it will not be transformed by the object, if harmful thoughts and harm, etc., do not arise, then it should be known that one has obtained non-retrogression, non-transformation is the characteristic and sign of obtaining the four immeasurables. The other four verses are the aspects of faults and virtues, meaning that from this point on, seven verses will explain what are the faults and shortcomings of the four immeasurables, and what are the virtues of the four immeasurables.
