Therefore, one should abide in loving-kindness without an object of focus. "Having the same cause" means that the mind of loving-kindness is the cause for generating actions of body and speech. Among these, "afflictions are the object of focus" means that afflictions such as desire and hatred are explained as objects to be focused on by the mind. When afflictions are exhausted, there is no object of focus, so it is explained as loving-kindness without an object of focus. If asked, what is manifested by afflictions as an object of focus? Therefore, it is said, "In order to sever the knots of the mind, the object of focus is severed." It is also said in the sutra, "By abandoning the afflictions such as desire and hatred that exist in the mind, the mind's object of focus is eliminated." Therefore, it is obvious that afflictions are the object of focus. "Moving and unmoving, experiencing with attachment and not experiencing, knowing." This shows the fourfold classification of the abodes of Brahma: the fourfold classification is the aspect of decline, the aspect of abiding and distinction, with afflictions and without afflictions. Among these, the four immeasurables of the aspect of decline are called moving, why? Because they eventually decline and disappear. The four immeasurables of the aspect of abiding and transforming into distinction are called unmoving, because they do not decline, and become excellent, without declining and disappearing. Those who have attained the samadhi of the four immeasurables and enjoy the bliss of experiencing the taste of samadhi due to attachment to the taste of samadhi are called having afflictions. Those who have attained the meditation of the four immeasurables but do not experience the taste of its bliss are called without afflictions. "Attachment" refers to clinging to happiness and having a narrow mind. Explaining the meaning of attachment, if one is attached to and clings to the bliss of the samadhi of loving-kindness, the mind will not enter into greater qualities, therefore experiencing the taste with attachment is called having afflictions. Being content with a little bliss of meditation and not seeking greater qualities is also called having afflictions. Among these, if the four immeasurables are divided into the aspect of decline

And, having the aspect of abiding and being special, having afflictions, and being without afflictions, there are four types. Where do Bodhisattvas abide and meditate? The meaning lies in this. Therefore, it is said, "Bodhisattvas do not waver, abide without attachment, not in wavering, not in savoring." Thus, among the four Brahma-viharas shown, Bodhisattvas abide in the aspect of having abode and being special, therefore they abide in non-wavering, abide in being without afflictions, therefore they abide in non-attachment, they do not abide in wavering, which is the aspect of diminishing, they do not abide in savoring, which is the savoring of having afflictions, the meaning lies in this. In order to show the distinction between small and large among the four immeasurables, two verses are spoken, beginning with "Un-absorbed nature." Among them, absorption refers to the place of non-absorption, which refers to the desire realm. Among them, the four immeasurables of non-absorption are all established as small, this is one type of small. The so-called small-intermediate, the form and formless realms are called the place of absorption, among the immeasurables of the place of absorption, there are also three types: small, intermediate, and large. Among them, in the four dhyanas of the form realm, there are three grounds: Brahma-pāriṣadya, Brahma-purohita, and Mahābrahmā. Similarly, the second dhyana also has three grounds, the third also has three grounds, and the fourth has eight grounds. Among them, the four immeasurables of Brahma-pāriṣadya are small. The four immeasurables of Brahma-purohita are intermediate. The four immeasurables of Mahābrahmā are large. Thus, in the place of absorption, the immeasurables enter into three types of large and small, the immeasurables of absorption, both small and intermediate, are also included in the small, the meaning lies in this. The so-called lower ground, relative to the first ground, the ground of faith-practice is the lower ground, relative to the second ground, the first is also the lower ground. Therefore, from the first ground, the ground of faith-practice is the lower ground, so the immeasurables of faith-practice are included in the small. Similarly, the second and third grounds, etc., are also lower grounds relative to the upper ground.
