is supreme, that is, generating faith and joy in the Dharma, as well as thought and wealth. It is called relying on a supreme virtuous friend, relying with faith and a virtuous mind is the supreme of reliance. Reliance is unsurpassed, and what is that? That is, generating faith and joy in the Dharma, as well as thought and wealth. This is the Mahayana Dharma that explains relying on a virtuous friend. Faith in the Dharma is called joy in the Dharma, and this is also unsurpassed reliance. Thought refers to various thoughts, from the thought of experiencing flavors to the thought of virtue, having such thought is the supreme of reliance, it is unsurpassed reliance. Wealth refers to accomplishing the Samadhi of the Treasury of Space, etc., filling the entire realm of space with various resources, and offering them to the virtuous friend. This is also the supreme of reliance. Contemplating in the manner of the three wheels being completely pure, and being possessed by non-discriminating wisdom, is also the supreme of reliance. Obtaining tolerance of the unborn Dharma from the eighth ground onwards, becoming one is also the supreme of reliance, as mentioned before, that is the meaning. Called the twelve verses that distinguish the immeasurable, even if one enters into maturing sentient beings with the objects of gathering, if one does not possess the immeasurable mind, then one becomes weary of sentient beings who act perversely and abandons sentient beings, therefore, to counteract this, it is explained to abide in the immeasurable. If one possesses immeasurable thought, treating all sentient beings like an only child, one will not abandon sentient beings, therefore, the meaning is that the twelve verses that distinguish the immeasurable are taught. The Brahma of reliance, abandoning disharmony, possessing non-discriminating wisdom, entering the three objects of focus, maturing all sentient beings. This verse shows the nature of the four immeasurables, that is, one must know the four natures. What are the four? That is, abandoning the opposing side, possessing the distinction of the antidote, possessing the distinction of entering, and possessing the distinction of action. Among them, the Brahma of reliance, abandoning disharmony, means abandoning the opposing side, reliance.

Refers to a Bodhisattva, because they possess the four immeasurables, and therefore do not abandon sentient beings even if harmed by them. Brahma refers to the four immeasurables of Brahma's abode: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. The opposing factors to the four immeasurables are harmful intent, violence, increased displeasure, attachment, and mental afflictions caused by anger. These opposing factors are eliminated by cultivating the four immeasurables or by being seized by non-discriminating wisdom, hence they are called abandonment. 'Possessing non-discriminating wisdom' indicates possessing the distinction of an antidote, because Bodhisattvas, sentient beings, and the four immeasurables are seized by non-discriminating wisdom. 'Engaging in three types of objects' indicates possessing the distinction of engagement, the four immeasurables of a Bodhisattva engage in three ways: engaging with sentient beings as the object, engaging with phenomena as the object, and engaging without an object. In the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, it is said that the loving-kindness of ordinary beings and non-Buddhists is focused on sentient beings, because they generate loving-kindness by focusing on the existence of self and sentient beings. The loving-kindness of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is called loving-kindness focused on phenomena, because they focus on these things as merely the phenomena of the five aggregates such as form, without the existence of self or sentient beings, and that the five aggregates are also of the nature of impermanence and suffering, thereby generating loving-kindness. The loving-kindness of Bodhisattvas who have entered the grounds and the Tathagatas is realized without an object, therefore the loving-kindness of Bodhisattvas who initially generate the mind of enlightenment realizes not focusing on sentient beings, and also realizes the selflessness of phenomena, therefore not focusing even on the phenomena of the five aggregates, thereby immeasurably benefiting sentient beings. Among these, the four immeasurables focused on sentient beings are common to ordinary beings, non-Buddhists, Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas. Loving-kindness focused on phenomena is for Hearers and Solitary Buddhas.
