The object of being able to rely on is this, which shows reliance through inner objects. The wise should think and know the Dharma in this way, and go to the virtuous teacher's place to prostrate at the appropriate time. This verse shows the characteristics of relying on a virtuous teacher, and there are three characteristics. Among them, the wise one is the person who relies on a virtuous teacher. Thinking and knowing the Dharma in this way is one characteristic. One should not seek a virtuous teacher with the intention of despising the Dharma and its speakers, or with the intention of stealing the Dharma, or with the intention of finding faults. Rather, one should understand with the intention of understanding and knowing the meaning of the Dharma oneself. This is the meaning of the verse. Going at the appropriate time is the second characteristic. Even when going to the virtuous teacher's place, one should not go at inappropriate times such as during meditation or eating. Instead, one should choose an appropriate time to go, that is, one should rely on and go at the appropriate time. This is the meaning of the verse. Going with reverence is the third characteristic. When going to the virtuous teacher's place, one should go with a mind that is tamed in body and mind and with reverence. One should not go with an untamed body and mind, without reverence, or with arrogance. This is the meaning of the verse. He has no attachment to respect and gain, and he makes dedication for the sake of accomplishment. This verse shows the dedication. Relying on a virtuous teacher is not for the sake of greed for profit, respect, and gain that one relies on a virtuous teacher and makes dedication. Rather, one makes dedication for the sake of accomplishment (of practice). How does one dedicate? One should not dedicate saying: May I obtain profit and respect by relying on this virtuous teacher. Rather, one should dedicate saying: May I, by relying on a virtuous teacher, at some point accomplish the noble path through the three doors of wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditation, and realize the meaning of the nature of reality. How does one accomplish after being shown? The wise one therefore pleases his mind. This verse shows the cause. What is the cause of relying on a virtuous teacher? With what

The cause of making that earth deity's mind happy and joyful is the cause. How should one make the virtuous friend's mind happy? The virtuous friend teaches and instructs, explains and advises in whatever way, and one practices and accomplishes it accordingly, which will make the virtuous friend's mind happy. If the virtuous friend's mind is happy, he will instruct and show me, therefore, making the virtuous friend's mind happy is the cause of reliance. From a small mind not proficient in the three vehicles, one strives to practice the inner vehicle. Regarding this, intelligent people understand the characteristics of the Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and the Great Vehicle, and thus become proficient in the three vehicles, which is the wisdom of relying on a virtuous friend. Having become proficient in the three vehicles, Bodhisattvas do not practice the Hearer and Solitary Buddha vehicles, but for the benefit of themselves and sentient beings, in order to realize the meaning of the Great Vehicle, they practice the Great Vehicle itself, which is the meaning of this statement. In order to ripen immeasurable sentient beings, and also in order to purify and cleanse the fields. This shows the field of relying on a virtuous friend. There are two types of fields of relying on a virtuous friend. What are they? The field of sentient beings and the realm of the container world. Among them, the field of sentient beings is to be fully ripened, allowing immeasurable sentient beings to engage in immeasurable virtues, thereby fully ripening sentient beings, for which one relies on a virtuous friend. The field of the container world is to be fully purified and cleansed, for which one relies on a virtuous friend. In order to make the Buddha's field complete with grounds of gold and vaidurya, and complete with abundant ornaments such as wish-fulfilling trees, one relies on a virtuous friend, which is the meaning of this statement. That share of Dharma that possesses qualities, one relies on that friend because he is without material possessions. This shows the place of reliance. If one relies on a virtuous friend, where should one reside and rely? Like the wealth of parents, brothers, and public property, which one has the authority to use as one pleases, this is called a share. Here,
