Here, the meaning of allocation lies in emphasis. One should abide in the merit of valuing the Dharma and considering it as one's own, and rely on a virtuous spiritual friend. One should not rely on a virtuous spiritual friend while abiding in valuing possessions and considering them as one's own; this is its meaning. From here onwards, one should understand the classification of reliance with three and a half verses. Regarding the statement that 'the detailed classification of relying on a virtuous spiritual friend is explained with seven verses,' the detailed classification of relying on a virtuous spiritual friend is elucidated with five and a half verses in conjunction with eight meanings such as place and things. Now, with three verses, the fruits of relying on a virtuous spiritual friend are explained through the detailed classification of past, future, and so on. The detailed classification for the present time is also shown in the same way; this is its meaning. 'Cause and effect' refers to distinguishing the past and so on, as before. For example, relying on a virtuous spiritual friend in a previous life is the cause, and relying on a virtuous spiritual friend in the present is the effect. Relying on a virtuous spiritual friend in the present is the cause, and relying on a virtuous spiritual friend in the future will be the effect. Thus, in terms of cause and effect, relying on a virtuous spiritual friend can also be divided into three aspects: past, present, and future. The meaning of 'as before' is like that. 'Through the door of Dharma is subsequent realization, even intelligent outsiders rely on a spiritual friend.' Here, external reliance and internal reliance are shown. Through the door of relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, one realizes the samadhi of the door of Dharma, and by repeatedly practicing the samadhi of how one has realized it, one will also rely on a virtuous spiritual friend; this is internal reliance. Offering Dharma robes and alms, etc., is external reliance, which shows external reliance. 'Listening to the Dharma is the yoga of the mind.' Here, coarse reliance on a virtuous spiritual friend and subtle reliance are shown. Among them, listening to a virtuous spiritual friend

Relying on the ear gate is called coarse. Why? Because relying on the sounds of others, the mind scatters outward. Relying on the mind and meditation is called subtle, because the mind looks inward. That is the yoga of the mind. It is called relying on the mind and meditation, which is relying on the yoga of the mind. Those with ego and those with no-ego mind are the inferior and superior forms. This verse explains relying on the virtuous friend in inferior and superior ways. That is, seeing that the virtuous friend, oneself, and things to be relied upon such as clothes exist, thinking, "I will rely on this virtuous friend with these things," this is having an ego mind, which is inferior. Not seeing the virtuous friend, oneself, and the three things to be relied upon, not thinking, "I will rely on this virtuous friend with this thing," this is having a no-ego mind, which is superior. Also, relying on the wise virtuous friend through actions and prayers. This verse shows relying from a close distance and relying from a far distance. Relying by offering in countless lifetimes, taking the bodies of many beings, is relying from a far distance. Relying by actions in this lifetime is relying from a close distance. Preparing to rely on the virtuous friend in this lifetime or in the next lifetime is relying from a close distance. Even in this lifetime, relying after many years and months have passed, or in the next lifetime, relying after many lifetimes have passed, is relying from a far distance. Making prayers and relying, wishing to rely on the virtuous friend in the next lifetime, is relying from a far distance. Making prayers and relying, wishing to rely on the virtuous friend in this lifetime, and relying in this lifetime, is relying from a close distance. What is the supreme reliance? It is the seventh verse, meaning that after explaining the various classifications of reliance, what kind of reliance is the most supreme way to rely on the virtuous friend? Which reliance is sacred? Which reliance is unsurpassed? These are all explained by the seventh verse. Relying on the holy virtuous friend is one's own mind.
