At all times, Bodhisattvas do not abandon sentient beings. Therefore, after explaining the Paramitas and the objects of gathering, the connection is made to explaining the offering to the Buddha, relying on virtuous friends, and explaining the immeasurable, in order to explain their relationship. Now, if we were to distinguish how many kinds of offerings to the Buddha there are, seven verses would detail the various distinctions of offerings. The summary meaning of the four verses beginning with "Offering overtly or covertly..." is: The four offerings and objects, as well as characteristics and dedication, cause and wisdom, as well as field and place, are also explained. This is what the fifth verse explains. Therefore, there are two ways to offer to the Buddha: overt offering and covert offering. Overt and covert, the Buddhas are the basis of offering. In good times, fortunate sentient beings will offer to the Buddha who has manifestly attained Buddhahood, which is called overt offering. In bad times, since the Tathagata is not present, offerings are made to the body images, paintings, and stupas of the Tathagata, which is called covert offering. "Offering clothes etc. to the Buddhas..." explains the objects of offering. The objects of offering to the Buddha include Dharma robes, alms bowls, umbrellas, and banners, etc. The "etc." includes acts such as listening and contemplating. "With utmost faith..." explains the characteristic of offering. So, with what cause does one offer? Because the Tathagata has abandoned all faults and is endowed with all virtues, being a field of merit, one offers with the strength of faith and admiration, that is its meaning. "In order to perfect the two accumulations" explains the characteristic of dedication. Offering to the Buddha is also dedicated to perfecting the two accumulations of merit and wisdom. So how does one dedicate? One dedicates by saying: May the offering I have made quickly perfect the two accumulations of merit and wisdom. Not exhausting the birth of the Buddha, possessing aspirations.

, which indicates the cause. Offering to the Tathagatas, and dedicating for the sake of perfecting the accumulation of merit and wisdom of those who make offerings, also arises from the cause of praying that in previous lifetimes, no matter where one is born, the birth of the Buddha will not be interrupted. The prayer is also that there should not be a time without the birth of the Buddha and a kalpa, and that one should also make offerings to the Buddhas there, and that the offerings made should not be without result and meaningless. The so-called "three without object" is "perfecting the offering to the Buddha," which shows what kind of wisdom is embraced. Bodhisattvas also offer to the Buddha with non-discriminating wisdom, so they offer without clinging to the Buddha to be offered, the Bodhisattva who offers, and the objects of offering such as Dharma robes. Offering in a way that is without clinging is called the perfect offering to the Buddha. In order to fully ripen limitless sentient beings, the term "other" indicates the field. Furthermore, one engages in offering in order to fully ripen limitless sentient beings. How can one fully ripen them? By explaining the Dharma of how to offer to the Tathagata in the mindstream of sentient beings, which is like a field, and then planting the seeds that will enable them to make offerings in the future, and by engaging them in the activities of offering, one fully ripens sentient beings. The phrase "things and other minds" indicates the place. There are two kinds of places for offering: abiding in things and abiding in mind. Abiding in things means relying on wealth and making offerings with Dharma robes and so on. Abiding in mind means making offerings with the distinctions of mind. To show what these distinctions are, it mentions "faith and reliance" and so on. Abiding in mind also includes faith, reliance, compassion, patience, and other proper conduct, conduct with things, realization, liberation, and truth. The characteristics of these will be explained in the commentary.
