Mostly empty and mostly not empty. Know that in all aspects it is not empty. That is to say, bodhisattvas who abide on the ground of faith practice, using the four objects of gathering to gather and ripen sentient beings, mostly do not ripen, but a small portion ripens, so it is called mostly empty. Because they do not see the truth of the Dharma and do not understand the thoughts of sentient beings, mostly it becomes meaningless. Bodhisattvas from the first ground to the seventh ground below, using the four objects of gathering to fully ripen sentient beings, mostly ripen, but a little does not ripen, so it is called mostly not empty. That is to say, mostly it becomes meaningful. Bodhisattvas of the eighth, ninth, and tenth grounds, using the four objects of gathering to gather and ripen sentient beings, just as they have ripened, all will ripen, and not one will be wasted, so know that in all aspects it is not empty. Those who are engaged in gathering retinues, because they abide in this way, in order to accomplish all things, this method is universally praised. This verse shows that the four objects of gathering are the method for ripening sentient beings. Bodhisattvas who gather and ripen the four kinds of retinues also abide in this way of the four objects of gathering, and fully ripen sentient beings by this method, and there is no other method than this method of ripening sentient beings. Why? Because the four objects of gathering accomplish the purpose of all sentient beings, therefore, the Tathagatas praise and declare that the easy method for accomplishing the purpose of sentient beings is the four objects of gathering. In order to clearly explain this meaning with this verse, it is said: Those who have been gathered and those who will be gathered, and those who are now gathering, all are like that, therefore, rely on it for the sake of sentient beings ripening. That is to say, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the past gathered all sentient beings, also abiding in these four objects of gathering, gathered and ripened.

Future Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will gather and ripen all sentient beings, and they will gather and ripen by abiding in this very object of gathering. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the present also gather and ripen sentient beings, and they gather and ripen sentient beings by abiding in these four objects of gathering. Therefore, these four objects of gathering are the only path, the only vehicle, for fully ripening sentient beings. Apart from this, there is no other activity for liberating sentient beings. This is its meaning. In order to summarize and show the meaning of the six perfections and the four objects of gathering that have been explained, verses such as "Thus, one is always unattached to enjoyment" are spoken. "Thus" means, as it was said above. Because a Bodhisattva possesses the perfection of generosity, he is called one who possesses the wisdom of being constantly unattached to enjoyment. Because a mind of attachment does not arise towards any enjoyment. Because he possesses the perfection of ethics, he is called peaceful. Because he does not pacify the path of killing, etc., which arises from causes such as desire. Because he possesses the perfection of patience, he is called subdued. Because he subdues with patience, his mind is not disturbed by hatred. Because he possesses the perfection of diligence, he is called the perfection of diligence. Because with the perfection of diligence, he accomplishes the completion of practice. Because he possesses the perfection of meditation, he is called abiding. Because the mind does not wander outwards, and he obtains the abiding of one-pointedness of mind. Because he possesses the perfection of wisdom, he is called not discriminating the realm of existence. Existence refers to the inner five aggregates. Realm refers to the outer objects such as form. Sign refers to the objects of both inner and outer. It means that one does not discriminate that it exists in other sentient beings apart from one's own continuum. Thus, a Bodhisattva becomes fully ripened through the practice of the six perfections.

Through these four objects of gathering, other sentient beings are also fully matured. Therefore, they gather all sentient beings. It is said, "The bodhisattva who has reached the other shore and possesses it, through the four objects of gathering, fully matures all sentient beings." This is the meaning. The chapter on reaching the other shore is complete. The seventh chapter, "The Differentiation of Offerings to the Buddha." After the chapter on reaching the other shore and the objects of gathering, the text explains offering to the Buddha, relying on virtuous friends, and entering the four immeasurables. What is the connection between explaining offering to the Buddha, relying on virtuous friends, and entering the immeasurables after the chapter on reaching the other shore and the objects of gathering? First, the perfections are taught to accomplish one's own benefit. By accomplishing the perfections, one will be endowed with all perfections. For the benefit of other sentient beings, the objects of gathering are taught. Through the objects of gathering, one will benefit sentient beings. If one's own benefit is complete and one is attached to one's own wealth, it will obstruct the assembly. Therefore, as an antidote to eliminate attachment to oneself, one should offer to the Buddha and rely on virtuous friends. If one becomes accustomed to giving outer objects such as robes and begging bowls to the Buddha, the thought of attachment to enjoyment will not arise. Without sparing even one's body and life, one should rely on virtuous friends. If one pleases virtuous friends, one will not be attached to the enjoyment of happiness that one's body and life possess. Therefore, to abandon the two types of attachment, one should offer to the Buddha and rely on virtuous friends. When engaging in benefiting others through the four objects of gathering, if the wrong actions of sentient beings and the suffering of samsara arise, the bodhisattva will not possess the four immeasurables and will abandon sentient beings without taming them. Therefore, as an antidote to this, the immeasurables are taught. If one is embraced by the four immeasurables and becomes accustomed to them, one will abide
