Giving. In how many ways does one give? One gives by abiding in three ways, such as faith. Among these, the remaining four perfections, such as discipline, and characteristics, etc., are in accordance with the explanation of the perfection of giving, so they are explained in the same way. Objects and fields are different, and it is explained what their differences are. Among these, the object of discipline is the discipline of vows, the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, and the discipline of practicing virtue. The object of patience is the patience of enduring harm, the patience of not caring about suffering, and the patience of definitely understanding the Dharma. The object of diligence is armor-like diligence and the diligence of application, etc. The object of meditation is the meditation of dwelling happily in the present Dharma, the meditation of truly accomplishing direct knowledge, and the meditation of benefiting sentient beings. The object of wisdom is the wisdom of knowing the conventional truth, the wisdom of knowing the ultimate truth, and the wisdom of accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings. The field of all those perfections is the Dharma of the Great Vehicle. If one focuses on hearers and solitary realizers and places sentient beings there, it is not called placing them in a supreme field. If one focuses on the Dharma of the Great Vehicle and places sentient beings in the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, it is called a supreme field. Among disciplines, the supreme is the discipline of a Bodhisattva, it is said. Just as one distinguishes between the supreme and the non-supreme in the object of giving, one shows the difference between the supreme and the non-supreme in the objects of the remaining perfections. The discipline of the ten worldly virtues, and the discipline of hearers and solitary realizers, the discipline of a Bodhisattva's vows, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, and the discipline of gathering virtue, are the supreme among disciplines, that is the meaning of what is said. Patience is for the wicked, the weak, and those who take life. It is said. The supreme object of patience is the harm done by the supreme of the powerful and influential, such as kings and ministers.

Patience is not something to be amazed at; enduring harm done by beggars and outcastes, who are weak and powerless, is the supreme patience. Enduring mere slaps with palms and fists is not something to be amazed at; enduring harm that endangers life is the supreme among patience. Practicing the perfection of diligence and abandoning its opposing factors means that, regarding diligence, merely accumulating virtue, or merely practicing the virtue of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, is not supreme. The conduct of Bodhisattvas is to practice the six perfections, such as generosity, and to abandon the opposing factors of the perfections, such as miserliness, which is the supreme of diligence. Meditation refers to the meditation of Bodhisattvas, called "Holding." The meditation of Hearers and worldly beings is not supreme; the samadhi of Bodhisattvas, such as Courageous Going, is supreme. Wisdom refers to reality itself. Wisdom is not supreme if it merely understands worldly terms and conventional truths; the wisdom that understands the selflessness of persons and phenomena is the supreme of wisdom. For the sake of generosity, to bring happiness to a single sentient being, even if harmed for many eons, if a Bodhisattva rejoices, what need is there to mention the opposite? Like this, seven verses explain the benefits of generosity: a Bodhisattva gives up all possessions that he owns to bring happiness to a single sentient being. After giving them up, even if he himself is harmed by the suffering of poverty and distress for countless hundreds of thousands of eons, seeing that a single sentient being is happy, he rejoices. What need is there to mention the opposite? Giving up the generosity of Dharma brings happiness and benefit to limitless sentient beings, and ultimately, he himself will attain lasting benefit and happiness, rejoicing after giving it up. A Bodhisattva gives up all possessions, bringing happiness to immeasurable sentient beings, and he himself attains happiness for many eons. What need is there to say that the Bodhisattva rejoices after giving these to other sentient beings?
