It is the Dharma giving. There are also two types of material giving: giving away external objects such as wealth and grain, and giving away internal objects such as head, hands, and feet. Among them, giving away internal objects such as head, hands, and feet is the most excellent of material giving. The giving that is free from the fear of falling into evil destinies and samsara is called fearlessness. There are also two types of giving of fearlessness: temporary giving of fearlessness and lasting giving of fearlessness. Temporary giving of fearlessness is to protect against the fear caused by kings, thieves, fire, water, and so on. Lasting giving of fearlessness is to protect against the fear of being born in evil destinies and the fear of being born in samsara, not being born in either of the two, which is lasting giving of fearlessness. If one gives freedom from the fear of being born in evil destinies and samsara, it is the most excellent of giving of fearlessness. For ordinary beings, generating the sight of seeing the noble truths in their continuum, establishing them in the fruit of stream-entry, or establishing them on the first ground, is to protect them from the fear of evil destinies. Why is this? Because those who see the truth have completely transcended the five fears. Placing those who have entered the stream and those who have entered the first ground in the fruit of arhatship, or placing them in Buddhahood, is to protect them from the fear of samsara. Why is that? Because from then on, they will not be born under the control of afflictions. The giving of Dharma is called the Great Vehicle. There are also the giving of worldly arts, medicine, curses, bloodletting, and the Dharma of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas in the giving of Dharma. However, explaining and giving the Dharma of the Great Vehicle is the most excellent of Dharma giving, and that is the meaning of it. The so-called "sign is compassion," sign and cause are the same, and the meaning is the same. The sign of being able to give completely in this life is compassion. Seeing beings suffering from lack of resources, one gives out of compassion. Because one gives through the cause of compassion, it is said that the sign is the most excellent. The so-called "dedicating this to aspire to the fruit of great Bodhi," Bodhisattva gives.

And the complete dedication is not for the sake of enjoying the possessions of gods and humans, nor is it for the sake of attaining the nirvana of the Shravakas, but it is dedicated for the sake of attaining the fruit of the Great Bodhi, therefore it is called the Supreme Dedication. The cause is the habit of cultivating the Paramita of Giving in the past. It is like this: in other lifetimes, the mind that is truly held by the three roots of virtue, such as non-attachment, etc., is truly practiced in giving, etc., and from the habit, the habit is moistened on the Alaya consciousness. By the power of habit, one enters the Paramita of Giving, and that is called the Supreme Cause. If you ask, what is the difference between the sign and the cause, and why are they divided into two? The cause is the uncommon cause, like the seed of a sprout. The sign is the cause that acts as a companion, like the four elements of water, fire, and wind to grow the sprout itself. Similarly, in the case of giving, the habit of cultivating virtues such as giving in other lifetimes is like a seed, and it is regarded as an uncommon cause. Having compassion for sentient beings in this life is the cause that acts as a companion, like earth, water, fire, and wind. Wisdom is non-conceptual, meaning that supreme wisdom is held by non-conceptual wisdom, so it is supreme wisdom. With wisdom, one does not cling to the existence of the giver Bodhisattva, the object of giving, and the receiver, and one gives in the manner of the emptiness of the three wheels, so it is supreme wisdom. Beggars, meaning the five fields of giving, Brahmins and merchants, etc., exist slightly, but those who beg are the field of begging. The sick, etc., are the field of suffering. Those who are poor in food and clothing, etc., are the field of the unprotected. Those who commit sins such as killing for wealth are the field of evil conduct by nature. Those who possess qualities such as morality and wisdom are the field of possessing qualities. One field is more excellent than another, meaning
