If wishes are fulfilled, there is joy, and if the desires of the heart are accomplished, there is joy. The giver is far more joyful than the beggar. Therefore, the compassionate giver, the Bodhisattva, overwhelms the joy of the beggars. Likewise, the joy of the beggars is also overwhelmed. Similarly, if the beggar does not see the giver, he is not happy; if his own wishes are not fulfilled, he is not happy; if the desires of his heart are not accomplished, he is not happy. The Bodhisattva giver is the same; if he is not seen, he is not happy; if his wishes are not fulfilled, he is not happy; if his desires are not accomplished, he is not happy. The giver is greater than the beggar. Therefore, the compassionate givers, with the distinction of unhappiness, overwhelm the unhappiness of the beggars. This single verse shows the distinction of the merits of the Perfection of Giving. "Compassion makes body, possessions, and wife beautiful, When will one give to sentient beings, Rejoicing and delighting, why not guard against separating from it?" Verses such as these show the merit of pure morality, and pure morality should also be understood as the purity of the ten paths of virtuous action. In this regard, compassionate Bodhisattvas, for the sake of others, even completely give away their own body and life, and rejoice and delight. If supreme joy arises, why not guard against abandoning the killing of other sentient beings? It means, how could one kill other sentient beings for one's own sake? Bodhisattvas with great compassion, for the sake of sentient beings, even completely give away all their possessions, and generate rejoicing and delight. If supreme joy arises, why not guard against abandoning the deprivation of sentient beings' possessions? It means, how could one desire to take the possessions of others without giving? Compassionate Bodhisattvas, for the sake of future pure conduct, even freely give their own wives to others, and rejoice and delight. If supreme joy arises, why not guard against abandoning impure conduct with the wives of others? It means, how could one engage in impure conduct with the wives of others?

That is the meaning. That verse explains the merit of abandoning the three faults of the body. Not looking, mind equal, without fear. If one completely gives with a lineage of compassion, how could an Arya speak false words in order to harm others? This explains that there are four faults of speech, and this verse explains the fault of lying. Lying is to look to body and life. If one cherishes body and life, and lies in order not to give up body and life, then a Bodhisattva does not look to body and life. Since they do not cling to both, how could noble Bodhisattvas speak false words in order to harm other sentient beings? That is, they do not lie. Furthermore, lying is because of love for some relatives and friends, and lying in order to benefit them, or because of hatred for some enemies, and lying in order to harm them. When a Bodhisattva attains the first ground, he realizes the characteristic of going to all realms of Dharma, and because he has attained a mind of equality between self and others, who is there to be loved and who is there to be hated? For whose benefit do noble Bodhisattvas lie, and for whose harm do they lie? Therefore, they do not speak false words, that is the meaning. Lying is because of fear of a king or a thief, or fear of losing sons and daughters or property, etc., a Bodhisattva is free from the five fears from the time he enters the first ground. If there are no five fears, how could a noble Bodhisattva speak false words in order to harm others? That is, they do not speak. Lying is for the sake of gain, and one lies for the sake of a small amount of wealth such as food and clothing. If a compassionate Bodhisattva gives away all inner things because he has them, then how could he speak false words for the sake of a small amount, or in order to harm others? That is, he does not speak. The compassionate one desires benefit for himself, and is very afraid that others will experience suffering.
