How does one become 'near to mixing'? The answer is that the term 'near to mixing' does not refer to actual attainment. It refers to being close to that stage. For example, just as reaching the top of a ladder is close to being on the roof of a house, one who abides in the seventh bhumi (ground) of non-appearance (Tibetan: mtshan ma med pa), having perfected all intentional actions (Tibetan: mngon par 'du byed pa), and because one abides at the peak of the ground of effort, one becomes close to the eighth bhumi of non-intentional action, and thus immediately attains the eighth bhumi, and is therefore called 'near to mixing'. Alternatively, it is called 'mixing' because one has attained the path of intentional action, which is the seventh bhumi, and because one immediately enters the eighth bhumi, abiding on the single path, it is called being connected to the eighth bhumi. The term 'single path of non-appearance' does not mean that at the time of the seventh bhumi, one sometimes abides in non-appearance, but rather that one constantly abides in non-conceptual wisdom through effort and intentional action, and is therefore called 'single path of non-appearance'. The eighth bhumi is called 'non-appearance spontaneously accomplished' because at the time of the eighth bhumi, one is free from all effort and intentional action, and abides in the spontaneously accomplished non-conceptual samadhi (meditative absorption), and is therefore called 'non-appearance also spontaneously accomplished'. Thus, there are two ways of abiding in non-appearance: abiding in non-appearance with intentional action and effort, and abiding in non-appearance without intentional action and effort. Among these, at the time of the seventh bhumi, even though one has already abided in non-appearance, one has not yet completely overcome the opposing factors, and therefore one cultivates non-appearance through effort and intentional action, and therefore the seventh bhumi is called abiding in non-appearance with effort and intentional action. As for the eighth bhumi, because one cultivates non-appearance itself, and through increasing it, the non-conceptual samadhi abides in a spontaneously accomplished manner without effort, it is called abiding in non-appearance without effort and intentional action. Therefore, in the eighth bhumi it says: 'O sons of the Victorious Ones, just as a ship sailing to the great ocean deliberately travels and moves forward until it reaches the great ocean.'
