In the treatise called "Five Verses," now we will explain the following in detail. For example, just as the characteristic of earth is solidity and the characteristic of water is fluidity, starting from showing the characteristic of the first ground (Joyful Ground), in order to differentiate and show the characteristics of each of the ten grounds (ten stages of bodhisattva practice), these five verses are composed, that is the meaning. "Realizing the supreme emptiness," etc., among them, the characteristic of the first ground is the realization of the supreme emptiness. The supreme emptiness is the selflessness (Sanskrit: anātman) of person (pudgala) and phenomena (dharma). These two selflessnesses are realized at the time of attaining the first ground, therefore the first ground is considered the characteristic of realizing the supreme emptiness. Therefore, it is said in the sutra that from the first ground onwards, thought and higher intention become very stable, mental strength and intellectual strength are greatly distinguished and discerned, and the equality of the three times is realized. Its meaning is that because of realizing the selflessness of person, it is called thought being very stable. Because of realizing the selflessness of phenomena, it is called higher intention being greatly realized. Also, because of having the wisdom of realizing the selflessness of person, it is called mental strength being greatly distinguished. Because of having the wisdom of realizing the selflessness of phenomena, it is called intellectual strength being greatly distinguished and discerned. Because of realizing that all things of the three times (past, present, future) have the same nature in emptiness, it is called realizing the equality of the three times. "All actions abide without being wasted," etc., the characteristic of the second ground is abiding without wasting all actions. How is it understood? At the time of the second ground (Immaculate Ground), seeing the maturation of actions such as virtuous and non-virtuous actions, and the results of those actions, such as happiness and suffering. Therefore, at all times, one abides only on the path of the ten virtuous actions, and does not even approach the path of non-virtuous actions in dreams. Therefore, the second ground is considered the characteristic of not wasting all actions. Therefore, on the second ground, one also turns away from killing, starting from "abandoning whips and weapons," even just through thinking, one does not harm other beings. If one regards other beings as beings and intentionally

What need to mention the various great harmful actions of mind and body, and so on. Furthermore, thus manifestly establishing the mind, whatever suffering destinies, evil paths, and downfalls of sentient beings exist, all of them arise from the cause of properly taking up the paths of the ten non-virtuous actions. I, however, abide in thus truly cultivating myself, and I shall also place others in true cultivation, and so on, extensively taught. In the meditation of supreme bliss, having cultivated, they are born in desire. This is said to be the characteristic of the third ground, namely, after a Bodhisattva has cultivated the meditation of supreme bliss, he should also practice equally from that meditation, and establish the characteristic of being born in the desire realm for the sake of sentient beings. Among these, the meditation of supreme bliss refers to the first, second, third, and fourth meditations of the form realm, as well as the characteristic of being without outflows. "Having cultivated" means having directly realized it and having obtained it. "Equally" means that those meditations have not been abandoned. "Rebirth in the desire realm" means taking a body in the desire realm for the sake of sentient beings. Therefore, even from the third ground, one truly sees the wisdom of the Tathagata as uninterrupted in this way. When one fully understands that becoming an agent is endowed with many harms in this way, then one should even more so establish ten mental intentions for sentient beings. What are the ten? They are like this: the intention of sentient beings without protectors and without support, and so on, until having heard those teachings, one also ascertains and understands them in one's own mind, and then goes alone to a solitary place, and acts in that way. By cultivating the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma, one thinks that it is not enough to comprehend these Buddha-dharmas with merely pure verbal actions. He desires the cause of cultivating the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma, being secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and non-virtuous dharmas, possessing investigation and analysis, possessing examination, having fully accomplished and abiding in the first meditation, which is endowed with joy and bliss born from seclusion, and so on, up to meditation and liberation, and samadhi and attainment, and
