Having entered Nirvana, which has cut off all afflictions and sufferings, but because of understanding that wisdom never ends, one realizes permanence. For what kind of sentient beings, what Dharma should be taught to subdue them, and what kind of form should be shown to subdue them, understanding the methods of teaching these Dharmas and showing these forms, therefore it is called understanding skillful means. Furthermore, in order to explain that the Bodhisattva state can also be realized through four other different ways, it is said: "Knowing the subtle consciousness of self, knowing various different consciousnesses, knowing that all are not true consciousness, therefore it is also called Bodhisattva." This means that because one knows the nature of the three: mind, intellect, and consciousness, and also knows that all three are not real, but are the nature of universal false discrimination, therefore it is called Bodhisattva. Among them, mind refers to the Alaya consciousness, because one knows the nature of the Alaya consciousness, therefore it is called "knowing the consciousness of self," because the delusion of clinging to the Alaya consciousness as "I" arises, so knowing the nature of the Alaya consciousness is called "knowing the consciousness of self." So, how does one know in order to realize the nature of Alaya consciousness? In the "Commentary on the Thirty Verses," it says: "Among them, the Alaya consciousness is the nature of all seeds of Vipaka, taking and its support, the knower is distinguishing and non-distinguishing. Always with touch and attention, feeling, thought, and thinking are also all present, it is neutral feeling, unobscured, and also of such a nature of neutral." If one can know like this, then one knows the nature of Alaya consciousness. Here it refers to the afflicted mind, which clings to the Alaya consciousness as "I" and "mine." Because one knows the nature of the afflicted mind, therefore it is called "knowing subtle views," why is knowing the nature of the afflicted mind called "knowing subtle views"? Because the afflicted mind, when creating virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral actions, still constantly generates the thoughts of "I am" and "mine is," which are difficult to detect, so knowing the afflicted mind is called "knowing subtle views." So, how does one know in order to realize the afflicted mind? In the "Commentary on the Thirty Verses," it says:

Abiding therein and entering excellently, it is called mind because of focusing on it. Consciousness, ego, possessing self-nature, associated with the four afflictions, constantly obscured and unindicated. Understanding in this way means understanding the nature of the afflicted mind. Consciousness refers to the six consciousnesses that engage from eye consciousness to mind consciousness. Knowing the nature of the six consciousnesses is called knowing the various forms of consciousness. How does one know that one has understood the nature of the six consciousnesses? In the "Excellent Differentiation of the Thirty Verses," it says: The three, in the six aspects, whatever the object is, those are them, through all-going and distinction. Mental events, virtuous and likewise afflictions, near afflictions, the three feelings and those associated with them. Understanding in this way means understanding the nature of the six consciousnesses. Understanding that those eight consciousnesses also have the nature of conceptualization, like the appearance of grasper and grasped, is understanding that all is unreal, all-pervasive conceptualization. Furthermore, acting with different names, understanding the five aspects, is called a Bodhisattva, for the sake of teaching this. Not knowing, knowing, following knowing, knowing, no object, knowing, following arising, knowing, not knowing, knowing, separately knowing, therefore also called Bodhisattva. Thus it is said, knowing the five aspects is separately knowing not knowing, separately knowing following knowing, separately knowing no object, separately knowing following arising, separately knowing not knowing. Thus knowing the five aspects, therefore it is called Bodhisattva. Here, the nature of non-conceptual wisdom is that all phenomena are focused on as if they were the face of the sky, therefore it is called separately knowing not knowing. Because there is no knowing of grasper and grasped in non-conceptual wisdom, it is called not knowing. However, non-conceptual wisdom is the nature of wisdom, like images appearing in the mandala of a mirror, in that mandala of wisdom, all knowable mandalas also appear, therefore it is also called knowing.
