The ground shows benefiting by the Dharma of the result by aspiring to great Bodhi. Thus, benefiting by the Dharma of the cause and also benefiting by the Dharma of the result, that is the meaning of being a Bodhisattva. The verse that generally distinguishes the characteristics of a Bodhisattva says that among the eleven grounds, how many Bodhisattvas are there in number? Having explained the characteristics of a Bodhisattva, now, without distinguishing those Bodhisattvas, the names by which they are called will be explained. There are two types of names: those with meaning and those without meaning. Among them, those with meaning are named by deriving from qualities, such as being called "Bhagavan." Those without meaning are like calling a poor person "Lord." Here, sixteen categories of names of those Bodhisattvas will appear. All of those are named by deriving from qualities, so they should be understood as having meaning. Because of faith in the profound knowable object with the characteristic of selflessness of person and Dharma, one is called a Bodhisattva. Because of admiring great power, one is called a great hero, because great power means that even from one pore, one can show the kalpas of the formation, duration, destruction, and emptiness of the three thousand great thousand world systems. Or, thinking of attaining unsurpassed Bodhi, one is a Bodhisattva. Thinking of liberating all sentient beings from the suffering of samsara and placing them in Nirvana, one is called a great hero. Or, because one possesses wisdom, one is called a Bodhisattva, because those who possess wisdom, even if they remain in samsara, will not be defiled by the faults of samsara. Diligence is the cause of becoming great, therefore, because one possesses diligence, one is called a great hero. Or, because one possesses the seven greatnesses, one is called a great hero, the seven greatnesses are those previously mentioned. Because one possesses extremely profound and vast wisdom, one is called intelligent, because one has obtained the great light of wisdom that explains the meaning of the profound meaning, one is called the supreme glory. Because one is born into the lineage of the Tathagatas, one is called the son of the Buddhas.

It is called. Because of engaging in activities without interrupting the lineage of the Buddha, it is called the basis of the Victorious One. Because the three bodies become the fruit, and strength and fearlessness, etc., become the cause of the Buddha's Dharma like petals, it is called the sprout of the Victorious One. Because it overcomes the afflictions that exist in the self and other's continuum, it is called the complete victor. Because he is the unrivaled hero who destroys the four maras, he is called the powerful one. Because he realizes the wonderful Dharma that all the world cannot understand, that is, the Dharma of ultimate truth, he is called the most wonderful. Because it leads the many sentient beings who have entered the wilderness of samsara to the great city of Nirvana, it is called the guide. Because the fragrance of virtue pervades all ten directions, it is called great fame. Because it possesses a great accumulation of merit such as generosity, it is called great merit. Because it possesses great compassion to accomplish all sentient beings, it is called compassionate. Because it possesses great enjoyment that transcends the world, it is called the powerful one. Because it possesses faultless actions of body, speech, and mind, it is called the possessor of Dharma. Thus, after separately showing the meaning of the sixteen names of Bodhisattva, in order to explain the meaning of Bodhisattva in detail, it is said, "Knowing that very nature well," and so on. Among them, because of understanding and realizing the five distinctions, it is called Bodhisattva. The five distinctions are: knowing that very nature well, knowing the great meaning well, knowing all meanings, knowing the constant nature, and knowing the means. Realizing these five, it is called Bodhisattva. Among them, because of realizing the selflessness of the person and the selflessness of phenomena, it is knowing that very nature well. Because of realizing the accomplishment of the meaning of self and others, it is knowing the great meaning well. Because of realizing all phenomena such as conditioned and unconditioned, defiled and undefiled, it is called knowing all meanings. Bodhisattvas do not refer to knowing some intermediate, nor do they refer to not possessing knowing some intermediate.
