If one performs virtuous deeds such as mental activities, but cannot endure the suffering of hunger and thirst, and clings to one's own happiness merely by sleeping and resting, then one is unable to exert effort for the sake of oneself and others. Bodhisattvas, because they perform virtuous deeds such as listening, can endure suffering such as cold and hunger, and do not cling to their own happiness such as sleeping and resting, therefore they exert effort for the sake of themselves and others. This shows the practice of the perfection of diligence. Regarding what is called "mindfulness as the main thing," those whose minds are controlled by afflictions and who forget the object of meditation do not have meditative concentration. Bodhisattvas possess mindfulness that does not forget the object of samadhi, and they are always endowed with meditative concentration. This shows the practice of the perfection of meditative concentration. Regarding what is called "perfect equanimity," those who do not have the samadhi of placing the mind in equanimity do not have the wisdom to know things as they truly are. Bodhisattvas always place their minds in equanimity, and possess the wisdom that does not conceptualize existence or non-existence. This shows the practice of the perfection of wisdom. Up to this point, it has been shown how to practice the six perfections. Regarding what is called "Bodhisattva who does not stray from the vehicle," if those who practice the six perfections in that way dedicate them to worldly enjoyments and the nirvana of the Lesser Vehicle, then they will fall away from the conduct of the Great Vehicle, and it is called straying from the Great Vehicle. Bodhisattvas, having practiced the six perfections, dedicate them for the sake of attaining unsurpassed enlightenment, and therefore they do not fall away from the conduct of the Great Vehicle, so it is called not straying from the vehicle. This shows making aspirations for great enlightenment. Thus, one also practices the six perfections and makes aspirations for great enlightenment, and that is what is called a Bodhisattva, that is the meaning. Again, in another way, practicing the six perfections and making aspirations for great enlightenment are the characteristics of a Bodhisattva, therefore, abandon suffering.
