Desire is the perfection of generosity. Generosity is for the purpose of benefiting sentient beings with food, distribution, and other resources. The so-called harmless view, harmless view is the perfection of ethics. Those who abide in ethics do not kill the lives of other sentient beings, therefore they do not harm life; they do not steal what is not given, therefore they do not harm enjoyment; they do not engage in misconduct with other people's wives, therefore they do not harm wives and daughters. The so-called patience towards those who harm, patience towards those who harm is the perfection of patience. Those who abide in patience, even if other sentient beings harm my life and enjoyment, they do not retaliate with harm. This is the patience of enduring harm among the three types of patience. The so-called steadfastness, steadfastness is the perfection of diligence. The aspect of diligence is that when engaging in virtuous activities, one endures suffering such as cold and heat, is not afraid, and does not retreat from the diligence one has undertaken, which is called steadfastness. The so-called mindfulness, the aspect of abiding in many noises and being attached to the taste of obtaining meditative concentration is unmindful. Abiding in the perfection of meditative concentration is mindfulness. Abiding in a solitary place to accomplish meditative concentration and not being attached to the taste of meditative concentration is therefore called mindfulness. The so-called much learning, if one hears much Dharma from many virtuous friends, wisdom arises, therefore much learning is abiding in the perfection of wisdom. Up to this point, it shows the accomplishment of the six perfections. The so-called striving for the benefit of others is a Bodhisattva. Thus, the aspect of accomplishing the six perfections, for the purpose of completely liberating sentient beings, dedicating it to unsurpassed enlightenment is called striving for the benefit of others, therefore it shows making aspirations to become a Buddha. Thus, accomplishing the six perfections and making aspirations to become a Buddha, that is the meaning of a Bodhisattva.

Furthermore, to demonstrate that a Bodhisattva is one who practices the six perfections in other ways and aspires to great Bodhi, it is mentioned, "Seeing what one possesses as a fault," and so on. What one possesses refers to the items and enjoyments that one has. Regarding one's own enjoyments, seeing them as impermanent, suffering, like dreams, and like illusions, and that attachment to enjoyments leads to birth in the three lower realms, and obstructs hearing of worldly and transmundane perfections. Those who do not see these faults do not engage in giving. Bodhisattvas, however, see that there are faults and shortcomings in being attached to their own enjoyments, and therefore completely give away inner and outer things. This shows that they possess the perfection of generosity. The term "not attached to enjoyments" refers to those who are attached to the enjoyment of the five desires and to possessions, who are unable to renounce from home to homelessness. Bodhisattvas, however, are not attached to the qualities of the five desires and to possessions, and therefore can renounce from home to homelessness. This shows that they possess the perfection of discipline. The term "without resentment" refers to the thought of retaliating when encountering harm caused by sentient beings, thinking, "He harmed me in this way, I will retaliate." This is called resentment. Bodhisattvas, even when harmed by other sentient beings, do not have the thought of wanting to retaliate, so they are called without resentment. This shows that they possess the perfection of patience. The term "yoga" refers to the continuous practice and cultivation of virtuous deeds such as meditating on tranquility and insight, which is called yoga. This shows that they are similar to practicing the perfection of diligence.

Regarding contemplating the faults of agitation, etc., one should place the characteristics of calm abiding in the mind, thereby calming the mind. When the mind is suppressed by sleep and drowsiness and becomes unclear, one should place in the mind the fruit of meditation or the qualities of the Tathagata (Sanskrit, tathāgata), especially the characteristics of praise, thereby refreshing the mind. If one strives to abandon cowardice and agitation, one will not degenerate from the practice of the Mahayana. Therefore, it is called dwelling within. This word expresses the aspiration for great Bodhi. In this way, one also cultivates the six perfections and makes aspirations to attain great Bodhi, therefore one is called a Bodhisattva, which shows the meaning of a Bodhisattva. Furthermore, cultivating the six perfections in other ways and making aspirations for great Bodhi are the characteristics of a Bodhisattva, and to show this, "having compassion," etc., are mentioned. For those beings who suffer from hunger and cold, etc., those who have no compassion do not give away food and clothing, etc. However, Bodhisattvas have compassion for those beings who lack resources and suffer, therefore they give away food and clothing, etc. This shows that the practice of the perfection of generosity is firm. Regarding "dwelling in the merit of shame," those who do not feel ashamed or afraid of committing evil deeds such as killing and taking what is not given do not have discipline. However, Bodhisattvas dwell in the merit of shame, and feel ashamed and afraid of committing evil deeds such as killing and taking what is not given, therefore they do not do them at all. This shows the practice of the perfection of discipline. Regarding "enduring suffering," those who cannot endure harm such as being beaten and bound by others will instead harm beings. However, Bodhisattvas endure and accept the suffering caused by harm from other beings, therefore they do not harm others in return. This shows the practice of the perfection of patience. Regarding "attachment to one's own happiness," those who hear...
